    Hi All,

I have just reinstalled XP Pro ... all is fine though I have had to make all the icon associations again ... quite a few !

Instead of the usual boring generic url shortcuts on my desktop, I find that I can locate sites I want faster if I customise them.
EBay logo for link to the auction site, etc.

I simply right click then 'properties then 'change icon' then 'browse'. I point to my icon folder and select a suitable image then 'apply' and 'OK'.

Does anyone know where the direction info is stored ? ... the desktop icon must have a reference file to direct it to my icon folder for the suitable image.

I would back this information up with the rest of my backup routine.

    Thank for any response.

    Norman.

Right click on the desktop icon, choose properties then "change icon ". The icons from MS are in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

    Does this help?

Thanks Johanna ... yes this is the location of the system icons, and I also have the location of my own icon folder.
Finding the actual icons is not a problem, it's when you 'change' an icon for one of your own, where is the information stored that directs the generic icon to put on new clothes ?

    Probably desktop.ini and the registry.

Icon info is stored in the Desktop.ini file in folders. You can make your own .ini files to customize your folders:

    ms reference

Thanks Pete and Tony, Useful ideas ... the Desktop.ini files would seem to hold the icon information. Thanks for the MS link.

    Regards,

    Norman.
