    Hey people,

Ive got a 'small' problem with my computer. The computer wouldnt startup on friday morning, so I removed sound card, LAN card, and Im only using one RAM chip, also only using one ide channel (ata 100). When I start the pc now you can hear the cpu starting up but the screen stays all black. I've tryed with another vga card but same thing happens.

My system is abit KA7-100 motherboard with athlon 750MHz cpu and two 128 MB RAM chips.

Have also tryed different dimm slots for RAM chip but didnt help.

There are no beeps at startup.

Have been looking through manual but cant figure this out.

Btw, it's an award bios (if that helps anyone).

Would reseting the BIOS help ?

    Im open for suggestion.

    Appreciate any response.

    las

Try booting to a start-up disk in the floppy drive. That may possibly eliminate the hard drive from being the problem.

If no joy, try it with the hard drive ribbon cable removed. Also verify cmos is set to check floppy in the boot sequence or set to A: C: order of boot trial.

    Post back results.

I noticed you trid memory in different slots. Do you have another memory board? Also, I think you have to have memory board in slot 0 or 1 (first slot) which ever way they number the first slot on your board. Make sure the Cpu fan is turning when you power on and it is up to speed. Post back. PLEASE :)

laasunde, If you have a voltmeter, measure the 5 and 12 volt lines to verify they are up to spec.

If the power supply passes muster you probably ought to get on down to the MOBO store because it sounds like your BIOS has went south. You should always get a post beep or beeps, assuming the power is being delivered to the board.

IF the Monitor does not display anything it can be one of three things.

    1--Video card not seated securely.

    2--Video card gone sour.

3-- Monitor itself has gone sour.

From what I read #2 can be illiminated.

A machine will boot without out a Monitor but will not boot without a working Video Card. And I believe there will be no beeps with a bad video card.

It it was a bad Monitor it would still give the beeps.

I hope it does not have to go as far as what Zephyr posted but it might.

Here is an update of what I've done.

I stripped my computer completely leaving only mobo and cpu.

I then connect my powersupply to the motherboard, and insert my video card into agp slot and connect it to my monitor. Start computer.. monitor still dead. Then I try this with another monitor - monitor still dead.

I then remove my video card and insert my room mates video card. First I connect it to my monitor - monitor dead, then I try it with his monitor - monitor dead.

I then remove my powersupply and try using my room mates powersupply. First I tryed with my video card - both monitors dead. Then I try it with my room mates video card - both monitors dead.

So I have bascilly try starting my computer with two different powersupplys, two different video cards and two different monitors - still monitor is dead.

I have no voltmeter to check the voltages.

During ALL my above test I heard no beeps and ALL the fans (powersupply, 2+cpu and video card) worked fine.

I was reading in my motherboard manual, and there is a jumper on the motherboard that will 'Discharge CMOS' - I've been very reluctant to try this coz Im not sure what it does, and it's not very well explained in the manual. Does this jumper reset bios or delete the bios or ? Does it make sense to try this ?

    Open for any suggestion.

Been without a computer for far too long now... help :)

    Nothing to lose.

Try it laasunde you can't hurt anything. It will dump the data contained in the cmos settings. That ordinarily is done when you want to reset everything back to different values than you currently have. It can also be a means of entering setup when you have lost the password for entry (when activated).

I don't think it has any relevance to your problem but give it a shot anyway, can't hurt.

I'm pretty sure your solution lies down at the MOBO store or at the very least with a good tech who can troubleshoot all MOBO items for a specific cause.

    Happy Easter

With all that has been tried, it sure looks that way.
