    I originally had 2 drives, a burner and a dvd rom drive. I removed them both to install a dvd-rw drive. The new drive reads cds, but it won't burn. I tried with nero and it says the only device available is "Image Recorder." The problem is, my computer still recognizes one of the old cd drives, even though it's completely disconnected. The tech guy from micro advantage said this might be causing the problem. I tried uninstalling the drive several times, and it disappears temporarily--but as soon as I restart, the old drive comes up again. I called Dell tech support and they had me press F2->advanced->IDE Controllers and the old drive wasn't showing up. But it shows up when windows starts up. I don't get it...and this is driving me insane. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the old drive???

    Edit by PeteC - OS is XP

    Your problem may well be that Nero does not recognise your new burner. You need to update Nero from the Ahead website - most updates add new burner recognition as they are put on the market.

    Thanks for replying. I don't think that's it. I've tried other programs as well. I think the problem lies with the fact that my computer refuses to uninstall the previous drive. I've tried uninstalling it but it always comes back. In BIOS, only the dvd-rw drive shows up, but as soon as windows starts it shows two drives (neither of which is labeled "DVD-RW "). Any help would be appreciated...

    If you are happy to look in the Registry ....

    Go to Start > Run > regedit > OK

    Navigate to ....

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\ScsiPort1\ScsiBus0\Target Id 0\Logical Unit Id 0

    Under Identifier in the right hand pane do you see one of the 'removed' drives or the new drive?

    and for ......\Target Id 1\Logical Unit Id 0 do you see the other 'removed' drive under identifier?

    Post back on this before we go any further - the ice is getting thinner from now on :D

    It lists the new drive, DVDRW IDE1008.
    Device name -> Reg_SZ->CdRom3
    Identifier ->...-> DVDRW IDE1008
    type -> ... -> CdRomPeripheral

    There is no such folder in my registry, only ...\ScsiBus0\Target Id 0\ and ...\ScsiBus0\Initiator Id 255

    :confused: :confused: If you solve my problem I'll give you my first born...

    The Target Id 1 folder would only exist if two CD-Rom type devices were 'present'.

    I suspect a corrupt file somewhere - maybe hal.dll, but I'm guessing here.

    I suggest you run System File Checker ....

    Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP install CD handy.

    Look in Event Viewer for notification of any changes made.

    I must say this is weird so I'm moving this thread to the Win XP forum for greater exposure.

    Appreciate the offer of your first born :) , but I'm way past that - my 'boys' are 30+ :D

    OK, I'm just going to post the stuff that I think might be relevant, even though I really have no idea what I'm looking at. This whole thing is probably my fault. I should've just paid someone who knew what they were doing to install it :(

    It looks like we're still on our own here :(

    The error messages you posted are relevant, but I confess that they do not help me towards a solution - I am as puzzled as you are over this.

    Have you run sfc /scannow ?

    Did you set the new drive to Master when you installed it and is it on the end of the ribbon cable?

    The only other suggestion I have at present is to replace the drive that Windows continues to see alongside the new drive. If the old drive was Master set the new drive as Slave. If that doesn't work reverse the settings - check out the manual on the new drive to see if it needs to be Master. The Master drive should be at the end of the ribbon cable.

    If this works out uninstall the old drive through Device Manager and then physically remove it. If the new drive was Slave it will need to be set to Master.

    It's fixed. I tried a bunch of different things that didn't work, Finally, I just took the cd-rw drive out of my other computer and put it in this one, set it to master, and set the new drive to slave. The imaginary drive disappeared and now both drives work perfectly. Thanks for trying to help.

    Well that's a relief! Wish I (we) knew what the problem was - just 'the wonder of Windows' :D
