Please help. I am running XP home and have Word 2000 installed. I can't seem to save a document by using the "Save as" option. I have to save the document to "My Documents" and then transfer it to CD. Then, as if I am not annoyed enough, it saves in a read-only format.

I saw the XP tip on how to deactivate the read-only problem. I tried to apply the change through file or folder "properties" but it didnt seem to work. The other method using the cmd line is confusing to me. I don't understand what the "path" is (any help?). I would like to use something like the cmd line so that I wont have to mess with it again.

    Thanks,

    Norm

    Welcome to the boards!
"C:\My Documents" is a path, "C:\WinNt\System32" is a path. "C:\My Documents\Filename.Txt" would be a full path and filename. If you wanted to change filename.txt from Read Only.
    attrib -r "c:\my documents\filename.txt "
Whenever you copy a file to a CD[RW?], and back to the drive, it automatically inherits the Read Only attribute.

Do you mean "Save As" options as a whole or just a "save as" with a redirrect to the cdburner? Ignore if all you want is the [syntax] command_line method to remove attributes.

But....out of curiousity, would you care to expand on and explore some possible reasons why you cannot use your "save as" options in word? Could you be a bit more specific in the description of the problem your having when you try to use this option?

    • Any error [if so quote the error, please]?

Has this always been a problem or did it ever work?

Have you done anything in an effort to fix the problem and if so "what "?

    Question?

    Norm,

Does your CD already contain any files?

Has anyone here been able to do that with the builtin CD-writing in XP. I had a similar problem, and installed Incd (from Ahead) to be able to save intermittantly. It seemed to me that the cd was being closed after the first batch of files were written to it.

I know what Norm means, same thing happens to me too. "Save As" works ok it is only when you try to save a document that you have created in Word and instead of saving it to a Folder in My Doc's. you want to save it directly to CD, it won't allow you to do so, a dialog box will tell you that the document is read only.
If you save it first in My Doc's then you can send it to CD using the XP CD writer, and I have to agree with Norm a pain in the butt

If you want to save directly to CD the same way you save directly to a floppy, you need to install and use packet writing software. Easy CD Creator's is called DirectCD and Nero's is called InCD (I think).

Once that's installed, a rewritable CD (CD-RW) must be used. It has to be formatted with the software and then it should allow you to do a direct save.

Isn't this one of the advantages of XP Pro over XP Home? If I'm not mistaken, you can save directly to the CD in XP Pro without any intervening set-up required.

    Clarification:

When writing to a CDR disk, files always are Read Only.

When writing to a CDRW disk, files can be Read Only or not Read Only (full permissions).
