the other night my mom was bombarded with spyware. she cleaned out over 200 files that sneaked in while she was online. afterwards, she couldnt connect to the internet. she called me.

i have removed spyware that attached itself to registery files to programs on my computer before. i always had to remove and reinstall the programs. i told her this, so she tried uninstalling and reinstalling her modem and internet explorer. she can ping the modem and it can ping the computer, but her browser still wouldnt connect. so i had her run the connection wizard. still, nothing.

i dont know what else to tell her. i dont know what to do to help her. she cant get ahold of her isp. she works during their business hours, and they are only on for a short while on Saturday. this all happened Sunday night.

any ideas about what it might be, how to fix it? i am so lost. i use cable internet, not dial up like she does. i dont know how to help her. can any of you help us?

thank you for your time and any help you can give us. :)

If your Mom made a fresh install of IE the odds are that it is set to 'Never dial a connection' - this seems to be the very strange default.

Right click the Explorer icon > Connections and check that 'Always dial my default connection' is ticked. (or go via Tools > Internet options > Connections)

She can check out the dial up connection by going to Network Connections, right clicking on the dial up icon > connect.

Make sure your Mom has a firewall and good, updated AV at the very least.

BTW - Passed through Kingman some years back - have to agree with your view of the place :D

she runs windows office or proffesional 2000 . been trying to get her to upgrade to Xp.

would the one for 98/ME work with her os?

PeteC ;) seems only a few old people like it here, **** snowbirds. and i will try what you suggested when i go over tonight. she got ahold of her isp. they had her do somethings, including unistalling her mcafee firewall. still nothing. i still havent touched the thing myself yet, it could be something that simple.

The winsock fix is for the OS - nothing to do with Office, so use the 98/Me version if that's what she is running.

tried, it wont let it work

that one box isnt checked either

i dont know whats wrong. i downloaded explorer for her, do a new install and see if that helps tomorrow. she is getting a couple errors with her McAfee when she tries to do trace the isp. she gets: create socket: could not create new socket. error #10106

and another that she couldnt recreate while i was there. she said it was similar.

could that be what is causing this?

The most common cause that I know of for the problem you are having is using an out of date (version) spyware cleaner, such as Ad-Aware, with newer reference files, or a newer build with old reference files. Was Ad-Aware used prior to this problem? If so, there should be backups and reinstalling them should put you back in business. Then get the newest version/reference files and scan again. If problem returns, run the winsockfix.
