I put in a new hard drive and took my old one out. The old one was NTFS and still had my operating system on it and refused to format. I got out the original Western Digital disk and put the hard drive in another computer as a slave drive and treated it like it was a new hard drive, I was going to partition and format. No luck, so I tried Partition Magic, it flagged me that it could not recognize the NTFS partition and asked if I wanted to partition and format. I let it go and now all I have out of a 10 Gig disk is 2 Gigs that are recognized as fat32. Why can't I see the rest of the disk? Is the NTFS partition still there? Will I ever be able to access it again??? Help!

My guess is that PM formatted the portion of the HD that was unused. Knowing the exact steps you took in formatting would help. Did you fdisk and then try to format, format c:/s {where c: is the letter of your HD} at the a: promt without doing fdisk...?

I assume that You want to clear the old harddisk of all its contents and repartition/format it fresh.

There is an application called delpart, which removes all partitions that You would like it to, no matter if it is NTFS, FAT32 or any other kind.

delpart can be downloaded here and it should be put on a bootable floppy.

If You have a Win98 or WinME start disk laying around, add delpart to it. If You don´t, a disk image which will create one for You can be downloaded here .

During the delpart operation, I would have only the old harddisk connected. That´s the simplest and safest way to ensure that You don´t blow the wrong partitions away ...... ...... !
