Whenever I try to go into hibernate or standby the computer tries to but then comes back to the desktop and I get this error message.

"The device driver for the ‘WAN Miniport – McAfee firewall network filter Miniport’ device is preventing the machine from entering standby/hibernate. Please close all applications and try again. If problem persists, you may need to update driver ".

In an effort to standby or hibernate it disconnects my dial up connection and when I try to reconnect It get this message.

    "Checking network protocol connections….
TCP/IP CP Reported error 31. A device attached to this system is not functioningâ€.

I than have to reboot before I can dial up.
I run XP Home with McAfee and McAfee firewall. I tried uninstalling McAfee and reinstalling it and it seemed to help for a couple of days but it's right back to where it was. Disabling the firewall doesn't help either.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you
    Floyd

    Hello Floyd,

    Questions:

    When did this start?

Did Hibernate/Standy ever work while still connected to internet?

Does it work if not connected?

    Regards - Charles

EDIT: I just tried going into Standby while still connected via dial-up - OS is Home. System WILL go into Standy.

It will disconnect me. Do not get any error messages from/about my firewall - Sygate. Get the disconnect message and am asked if I want to reconect.

    My inferences until known otherwise:

Have not tried with 9X OS - Xp will not keep connected with a dial-up going into standby/hibernate and the error message you get is peculiar to McAffee (and maybe to other firewalls). One of McAffe's components blocks XP from going into the Standby/Hibernate state.

    Hi Floyd,

The ability to go into standby while connected via dial-up and the McAfee error message/reboot to connect again problem IMO are two seperate issues.

I don't know what happened to keep you from going into standby but according to the message you've got, its McAfee and you should persue it with them.

BTW, if you conduct tests with your firewall off, put XP's firewall on for the duration; you're in great danger of getting a worm infection such as Blaster w/o a firewall on: Start > run Type Services.msc > scroll down to Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)... and double click. In the dialog properties box, enable ICF by starting it.

I was part of a thread on this type of issue http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=24598 See if there is something in there of help.

    Regards - Charles
