i'm using Win XP home on a Pentium 4 computer. now i have a problem: i downloaded a new program and was trying to install it. at the end of the installation process, it asked me to restart my computer. i clicked yes. then the computer restarts and when the windows starts, the new program I just downloaded jumps out ahead of all other programs.

The problem is whenever this program appears, my computer will automatically restart… until windows starts again and this program appears again. Then my computer will automatically restart again. this happens everytime i try to turn on my computer.

So now I can’t even get into windows. Is there any way to delete a program in DOS?

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi cstdc

    Two questions:
Is the program on an NTFS or Fat32 partition?
Can you start in safe mode with it restarting?

When booting into safe mode, you get a DOS like interface. It is not pure DOS but it does act similarly.

    Turn off auto restart
    Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery
uncheck auto restart to prevent an endless loop of boots

    Crash Override:
I disable auto restart on all XP comps I work on to prevent problems like you described. Just out of curiosity, what was the software that caused the problem for you?

I have auto restart disabled on all of mine too (roughly 500 locally). That way if a user crashes, I can see the BSOD on screen rather than hunting for the minidump. I didn't actually start the thread so I have not experienced the problem recently. My users have regular user rights, so if they try and install software, they occasionally get this happening.

and you answered, and I failed to scroll up... sorry.

cstdc Just out of curiosity, what was the software that caused the problem for you?
