    Hello All

Non techie I'm afraid - not even sure what is meant by backing up mail files -

I am geting the following error message when starting Netscape 7 on my ancient W98 P2 pc.

An error occurred reading the startup configuration file. PLease contact your admionistrator. pref.js, SyntaxError. illegal character.

Any clues? It definitely doesn't mention any line number but I have a suspicion that the user name has corrputed.

    Welcome to the Forum, CockneyCelt!

    Hi CockneyCelt,

You have a corrupt prefs.js file, and as you have no backup copy, you need to delete the prefs.js file.

    Exit Netscape and Quick Launch
    Open Windows Explorer
    The file is located here:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    Start Netscape
You will have to redefine your Preferences but now you have a pristine prefs.js file. You may find that your Mail & Newsgroups have disappeared. If so let us know and we will help you recover your files.

See the sticky at the very top of this Forum, titled: Preventive Browser Maintenance. This has details on how to make a backup copy of your Profiles folder.

]Everything Ok to the deletion of the .slt file, Ramona.
However when I go to here it all goes pear shaped. There is a residual profile which I seem to have saved but now it is not working. When I click on the Profile Manager for either of the two user names I get the js.pref dialogue box and on the residual entry it now says that it has been deleted. HELP still urgently urgently required. The problems begin with the Preferences as Netscape seems to think I have never been before and it keeps linking me to the Netscape Server

To clarify - there was a profile that contained all my settings for Netscape 7. However when I upgraded to 7.1 then the problems occurred.

I have deleted the corrupted*.slt file :) but it appears to have not cleared the problem.

Each time I select either of the profiles related to me on the Profile Manager it says that all the details are missing or that I have a corrupted JS.pref, even tho have deleted it. I get directed to setting up a user name on the Netscape server and it's at this point I despair  and feel I have lost all my mail for good.

Why can you not just edit a profile like Outlook allows you to?

    In despair.

    Hi CC,

Oh dear, you deleted your Profile when you deleted the *.slt file. What I suggested was to delete the prefs.js file:
Have you emptied your Recycle Bin yet? If not then open the Recycle Bin, highlight the *.slt folder, then click on: File | Restore.

    Let us know...

    Ramona :)

    Alas Ramona

I have nothing in my Recycle Bin and although some residual settings remain linked to previous versions of Netscape 4.77 and &.0) including a .slt file there is no pref.js file as it appears in my recklessness it is deleted too. :(. It appears that I might have to start again. Maybe with Outlook Express.

Mnay thanks for your help but I don't think I'm gonna make a techie by any stretch of the imagination.
