Attempting to help a lady with her 98 OS that knows "only how to turn it on." She is distant to me and all speak is by email. I can't help myself much, but wish to help this lady.

Problem: She cannot view background pictures, like on a Web Page or email that might have fonts on it also, such as a background and poems or verse over that. She cannot view some URLs that have a block for a picture, such as a greeting card whether animated or still.

Before I loose her completely, I'm asking for directions to possible tick or untick something to offer to her to solve her problem.

I tried to get her to join this Forum and ask. She won't do that becaue of fear that someone might tell what to do and she can't follow the instructions.

Help will be appreciated because it might cause her to believe I "know "something!

    Hi Mudd,

First thing to check is tools>internet options>advanced tab under multimedia, check 'show pictures'. Is she using a popup blocker? Have her right click where there should be a picture and click 'show picture' to see what happens. Right click and properties on pics to identify type, ie; .gif, .jpg

Link her to this post and assure her we can walk her through the steps. :) (unless of course you want ALL the credit :D :D )

Thanks again for jumping in. This is a very nice person, a School Teacher and PC is not her subject to teach. She's learning and some how she got to me through a mutual friend. We went through the "show pictures" already. She get pictures fine on the regular email, and pictures fine on most URLs. She said something once about "got an error msg concerning JAVA. Don't know what that is and don't want to know................" or something along that line. Could JAVA being off, like disabled, be the problem? Remember, the only things she can not receive are the pictures on some emails that have sent a URL rather than the link. But, if she goes to the link, the same. She got a greeting card from a student and it would not display the picture, something about her settings or something not enabled, according to her. She lives many files away and I can't go there to look and help.

She won't visit the site because of the reason given in my original post.

Credit! Man I just want out of here.......! School Teachers were my favorite people, it's true and to long a story for here. She lives and teaches in the sticks, about 30 miles from the nearest city in West Texas. A Technician visiting her is really not an option as the computer is at school and not at her home. Suppose they get Tech Service by Contract, and only when they go dead!

I'll go through what you mentioned Monday when school is in progress. Still believe it is something that was disabled or turned off, as she mentioned that months ago the PCs were "tuned up" so to speak and she noticed her problem after that.

I'll go through my XP and see what may be the same as 98 as I remember, hoping something will stick out.

    Thanks

EDIT: No Popup Blocker was mentioned. I'll ask.

To address the greeting card problem: It's possible she got one of those cards that require their software to be downloaded before the card can be viewed. If so, she was wise not to agree to download it.

She sent the link to me and it Opened fine. I copied the picture and sent it to her by email. She opened and viewed it there.

What ever is related to the background picture of URLs and URLs sent by email (not the link) must be the culprit. She has no problem with email pictures.

Yes, it could be the problem, and no, it is not a problem, it is a feature.
You'll understand this in a second, especially if the email program is Outlook Express.
The default install of OE is running in the Restricted Zone of Internet Explorer. In the Restricted Zone of Internet Explorer, one of the default settings of this is that Java is disabled for security reasons.
It really is best left this way, as an email can be sent with a virus, and just viewing the email would be enough to install the virus. You would not need to open an attachment in this scenario. Impress her with this iou'll understand this in a second, especially if the email program is Outlook Express.

I'm going to copy all the replies and forward by email Monday when she is back at school. This is good advice I know but still doesn't solve her problem. Maybe the post from NOAHDFEAR about ticking the "show pictures" will do the trick. I'll also suggest she select the other option as "play music, show animations, etc" and maybe that will do the trick.

Appreciate all the advice and replies. I'm sure she will also.

    Thanks

Edit: By the way Administrator, I have received three emails that indicated a reply by markp62 even though he has only one post. Maybe it thinks I'm hard to convince?
