Running Winning XP - power scheme settings is to turn off monitor after 20 minutes. Up until two days ago, when I would move my mouse, the monitor would come back on....now I have to reboot. I haven't changed any settings, and I'm virus free - any ideas? thanks.....Michelle

artful - Have you checked your power management settings in your BIOS? I don't know why they would get changed but with computers anything is possible. I had the same problem for months and tried everything in Control Panel and BIOS concerning Power Management and nothing helped. What finally fixed my problem was to uncheck Load Power Profile in the Start tab of the System Configuration Utility. My power management might have been buggered or whatever but I'm telling you this as it's what fixed my problem which was exactly as you describe. (BTW, my preferences are everything always on so this may not be the fix for you but I HTH)

    Checked Power Supply

Thanks so much. I did use the system configuration utility - but there is only uninterruptible power supply listed - nothing else about power....I'm at the point where I'm thinking about reformatting my hard drive - do you think this would cure the problem? MIchelle

Probably, but a bit drastic at the moment.

    Run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space. You may need your XP install CD.

To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer ( My Computer icon > right click > Manage > Event Viewer > System)

And check in the BIOS under Power Management Setup - you should see 'Video off Method' which should be set to DPMS support or similar.

And try reloading your video drivers.

The devil is in the details

Well, I followed your advice. Got DCOM and Service Control Manager errors. Don't know how to get into bios - copied the error messages from microsoft. Tried to reinstall (repair windows) and got this messsage: Nvidia AGP filter not compatible with XP - stopped installation. Have a message to my PC maker about this driver..here's the messages:

EVENDCOM got error "%%%1" attempting to start the service %2 with arguments "%3" in order to run the server:
    %4T_SERVICE_EXIT_FAILED

    EVENT_RPCSS_START_SERVICE_FAILURE
    Message:
DCOM got error "%%%1" attempting to start the service %2 with arguments "%3" in order to run the server:
    %4
    EVENT_BOOT_SYSTEM_DRIVERS_FAILED
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: %1

followed Microsoft instructions to find vendor, but when I looked in registry, couldn't determine anything....my computer iq I think is very low when it comes to registry modification.....

    what do you think? Michelle

The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is a network thing - don't worry about that. Service Control Manager - if you double click on the error the full 'version' opens and the icon below the up/down arrows copies to clipboard - you may then paste here.

Generally you will get into the BIOS (Setup) by hitting the Del or F1 key immediately after the Bios beep on boot up. If you see the POST screen - that first DOS screen that appears on boot the key is generally listed there.

As you had problems with the repair I suggest you reinstall the latest video drivers for your card.

If you don't know which card you have download Aida32 from my sig or Everest which will tell you.

If you do decide to do a format and reinstall remember to install the motherboard drivers which you should have on CD.

    Well - the mystery continues

Tried all the recommendations. My PC maker micron sent me a note about how to use the repair function of windows xp - duh and to remind me I was out of warranty. I DID remove any old programs that I wasn't using, reinstalled windows XP three times. Bought a program called the Ultimate trouble shooter - don't know if it helped....but now everything works great - and I have no idea why - never got into bios....didn't change start programs....nor reinstalled video drivers. I was watching an old movie about Saint Bernadette (lourdes healilng) with Jennifer Jones - could it be devine intervention (giggle). Thanks so much for all your help. I learned a lot - especially the spc scan feature. As Arnold would say...I'm sure I'll be BACK.

    Confused but happy in California......Michelle
