I have a laptop (with XP Pro) that came with Netscape 4.7. I have been trying to download the upgrade to 7.1 but have been running into some difficulty. I am using the custom download setup. Most files will download, however I keep getting a message when the download is done:

"Some files have failed the CRC check and are being downloaded again ".

The files that are not getting downloaded are:
    Netscape XPCOM
    Mail & Instant Messaging
    Macromedia Flash Player
    Winamp
    US Region Pack

It trys several times to download these files but with no success and eventually gives up. I have tryed this several times with the same results. What's the problem here? What do I need to do to get all of these files to download?

    Welcome to the Forum, Unyquity!

    Hi Unyquity,

Did you download the Offline install file, or are you trying to do an online install? That's not clear to me, and why I ask. Note that Netscape 7.1 isn't an upgrade for Netscape Communicator 4.7. They are two unique applications.

    Download from this site: ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/pub/ns7/7.1/
This is the SillyDog701 Streamline Version, and with a "Custom" install you can eliminate AIM/NIM, unless you want to use Netscape Webmail through Mail & Newsgroups. You can read about the Streamline Version, and also download it here: http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/71.html

Clean up your C:\WINDOWS\temp directory before installing...

    Ramona :)

To install the 7.1 version, I clicked on the "Netscape 7.1 browser" download link on their homepage. When I clicked on the "NSSetup" file that was downloaded to my 'puter, it started to download (online - that is, I had an Internet connection but I was not logged onto a browser) the necessary files for 7.1. This is when I ran into the problems I previously described.

I will check out the links you have so kindly provided. One question though; should I delete all previous Netscape programs files first and do a clean install with the 7.1 version? I have saved all of my profiles already to a seperate disk.

I recieve all of my e-mail on the Netscape browser but I do not subscribe to Netscape Webmail. Would the "streamline" version work for this need?

    unyquity,

If you have Netscape Communicator 4.7 installed, don't uninstall. The Netscape 7.1 install will convert your 4.7 Users Profile data to Netscape 7.1.

You couldn't install 7.1, correct? To be on the safe side, look in your Add/Remove for Netscape 7.1, and if it appears, then remove the program.

    Reboot your PC

Next check these folders, and if they exist, then delete them:
    mozilla.org folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

    Netscape folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
NOTE: DON'T delete the first Netscape folder, only the second Netscape folder. The first Netscape folder contains the Communicator and Users folders. These are the program and profiles data for Communicator 4.7.

    Next: C:\WINDOWS\temp
Clear all files.se folders, and if they exist, then delete them:
    mozilla.org folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

    Netscape folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
NOTE: DON'T delete the first Netscape folder, only the second Netscape folder. The first Netscape folder contains the Communicator and Users folders. These are the program and profiles data for Communicator 4.7.

    Next: C:\WINDOWS\temp
Clear all files/folder in the temp direey exist, then delete them:
    mozilla.org folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

    Netscape folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
NOTE: DON'T delete the first Netscape folder, only the second Netscape folder. The first Netscape folder contains the Communicator and Users folders. These are the program and profiles data for Communicator 4.7.

    Next: C:\WINDOWS\temp
Clear all files/folder in the temp direey exist, then delete them:
    mozilla.org folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

    Netscape folder - located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
NOTE: DON'T delete the first Netscape folder, only the second Netscape folder. The first Netscape folder contains the Communicator and Users folders. These are the program and profiles data for Communicator 4.7.

    Next: C:\WINDOWS\temp
Clear all files/folder in the temp directory

It's also a good idea to export your Communicator Address Book as an LDIF file as a fail safe.

If you don't use AIM, all you have to do is deselect it when you do a "Custom" install of the 7.1 Streamline Version of Netscape.

If this isn't clear, please feel free to ask further questions.

    Ramona :)
