The only items I have in startup now are:

MSN Messenger (lot of good this does me!)
    Scan Registry
    System Tray
    AVG
    Zone Alarm

Tried to repair IE6 and it won't let me - it says I have to run setup again because of a missing esshared.dll file. If I run setup will all my current customizations be lost or will it only install over the one already here

    Thanks,
    Kim

Some of your current settings may be lost, like homepage, security/privacy levels. Nothing major. Did you run the scandisk /autofix /surface from DOS? You can disable MSN Messenger from startup from within it's options.

I ran scandisk/ autofix/ surface. Has not changed the way my computer is behaving. Seems very strange to me (can't be a coincidence, can it?) that all the problems I am having are somehow related to internet - Explorer, MSN Messenger, Outlook Express, Updates and Internet Connections in the Control Panel

I want everyone to know how much I appreciate you all racking your brains on this one.........

    Thanks,
    Kim :)

That is real strange the connection tab wont function correctly

yes a repair or reinstall will change your customizations, Like if we have Google installed, it will need to be reinstalled.
But you should use the repair or reinstall then make sure repair works correctly

Do you have the file esshared.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\esshared.dll <<should be here

If you have one but its in other places copy it to the system folder, and check its properties> version, so we can compare it to other win 98 users.

Most likely after we find one for you the repair option will report yet another missing file, so we will have to find/replace it to.

I suggest a reinstall if IE, as Esshared.Dll is an important file for IE and Windows. The description of it is "COM+ EventSystem Shared Utilities ". IE is integrated in windows very tightly.

    Kim,

You would need to recustomize and check for updates but if you paste this into the run box it will remove IE6.

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

Locate IE6Setup.exe on your drive and double click to reinstall.

O M G - I can't believe it! After 2 weeks of trying everything I am finally up and running properly again! I reinstalled IE6 and I am running at warp speed :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH to all of you who spent your valuable time trying to help me out of this jam :D I am extremely grateful! This help site is the BEST.

If anyone has any tips on keeping my surfing habits safe - I would love to hear them. I am currently running Zone Alarm, Spybot and Adaware - is there anything else I should be doing on a regular basis or things I should watch out for?

Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

    Kim
