Yesterday I decided to defrag my disk. Normally on my older system I run scandisk, then disk cleanup, then disk defrag. On my new XP system, I can't find the scandisk, so I just ran disk cleanup. It compressed all my files and turned the file names blue when I looked at them in explorer. I managed to turn off the color, but I don't know how to uncompress the files. And I don't know how to tell disk cleanup not to do it again. Any suggestions?

When you click "Disk Cleanup" it will go through the long waiting process, then when you have the choice to check and uncheck what you want to delete/clean/zip, there should be an option "Compress old folders" dont check it

Open My Computer Right click on your main drive (C drive?) and select properties, before using the options in Disk Cleanup un-select Compress Drive to save Disk space. While your there de select Allow indexing...

The 'compress old files' should only compress files that haven't been used for 50 days or more.

If you do something that needs one of the files, it will be uncompressed on the fly. Maybe a slight delay but probably nothing you will notice.

zilla - Windows Explorer~tools~folder options~view and you'll find a check box near the bottom of the Advanced Options.
