I have had these recommended updates on my windows update page for a few years now. Just out of curiousity, are any of these needed?

Update for Windows Media Player 9 Series (KB837272)

Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package
    Download size: 224 KB, < 1 minute
The Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package provides a workaround for computers running Windows 98 Second Edition with Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard drives, large caches, and modern processors. IDE hard drives store data in a hardware cache (temporary memory) and write the data to the hard disk later. For these computers, data can be lost during the shutdown process because the amount of time that it takes for fast processors to shut down is so short that the hard disk may shut down before the data in the cache is written to the hard drive. This update introduces a two second delay in the shutdown process, which allows the hard drive's cache to write any data to the hard drive. Download now to delay your shutdown process slightly to prevent data loss. Read more...

    Root Certificates Update
    Download size: 204 KB, < 1 minute
This item updates the list root certificates on your computer to the latest list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables a greater range of security-enhanced Web browsing, secure e-mail, and secure code delivery applications to work seamlessly. This update includes root certificates from Verisign, Thawte, and Post.Trust in Ireland. Read more...

I would say to accept Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package (assuming you have 98SE) and Root Certificates Update, then click 'personalize windows update' from the left pane, let it scan and place a check next to the ones you don't want. Save your settings and you will not be offered those updates again. :)

Unless, of course, you are using Media Player 9 to perform the specified task - if so, Update :)

Thanks Pete and noah. One question though, does your HD have to be a special type to download that 'IDE' package? I'm quite a novice, and I assumed you had to have an 'IDE' HD to do it..lol

Two types of hard drive (internal) - IDE and SCSI. Yours will undoubtedly be IDE and I recommend that update (thinking back to my 98SE days :D).

BTW - Windows update will not offer an update if it is not appropriate to your system.

Thank you so much for clearing that up, Pete :)
I installed the HD package and the root certificate one, but avoided the Media player d/l, since I mainly use Real Player or Quicktime for all vids and media.
