    Hi,
I recently install IE6-closed all programs-opted to download the setup to a folder, and installed later. Installed all but the Win Media vs that is bundled, the codecs for it, and any language
    options.
Today I noticed when I access explorer in windows (98se),
If I double click on the windows main directory folder, other folders are often opened instead. With IE6, you get the little disclaimer that indicates it is 'dangerous' to access windows files-in the right pane of explorer. Ounce I click to show all files-I can go back and double click on the Windows main folder and drop down the subdiretories without a problem. Also, the subdirectores will expand off the main folder if I just click the + sign. But-open explorer, double click on the windows fodler, and another folder on my 'C' drive opens. Has anyone encountered this wierd bug? Desperate to know-as I am rebuilding my system
    today.
BTW, to isolate the problem to IE6, I formatted and reinstalled my system from a disc image which contained IE5, and reinstalled 6.0-the behavior occurred immedately after.

    Thanks Milt

Just a guess on my part, as this may be a bug, if the info below does not hold true..........

Gotta' ask if you are clicking on the +PLUS sign to expand folder list or are you cliking on the folder its self?

    Do you have preference set for "point_to select/single_click_to_open" or "single_click to_highight/double_click_to_open "?

What happens if you slow down your clicking and take care to only click once on a "plus" to expand list, or alternatively, are careful to move far enough to the right of the plus sign to only highlight or focus on folder name and double click.

The behavior you are describing can be reproduced by "Happy Mouse Fingers" and double clicking on the PLUS signs or in, what I call the hot zone, to the left of the Plus sign. This will often open [expand or close] the folder of focus, on the first click and open the next folder the second click happens to be focused in when it occurs.

Experiment and see if this holds true. Many have mouse software that allows the setting [via control panel] that can control this. The exact terminology for this setting escapes me, but I know it can be done. Being aware of this behavior and consequently taking care not to get mouse happy may prevent this annoyance.

In an effort to offer something helpful, if the above proves useless:

You can disable this "Warning" with a tweak if your interested and find you can do without this reminder every time you wish to view Windows Files:

Does the problem persist if you upgrade "online" from Windows Update as opposed to upgrading from the "save" folder?

    Goddez,
Thankyou for your response. I have temporarily gone back to IE5 (restored a disc image), to compare. I must say, the behavior of explorer5 is more stable. I do have 'single click to highlight/
double click to open' selected. I don't know is IE6 changes this.
I can highlight a folder with a single click, and double click on it, and it opens fine.
I can also click the plus sign, and it will expand. The specific erratic behavior I was experiencing seems to come when I double clicked on a folder without highlighting first-primarily the Windows
folder, and Program Files. This action would often open another folder on the root. I cannot duplicate this with IE5. It also appears the loading of the explorer window has a slight performance hitch as it opens-in other words, it just does not open as quickly and solidly as with IE5. In general, I really like 6.0, and the overall performance of my system seems good. It just seems related to this issue in explorer.

    Kevin,
I don't know as I have not tried to upgrade that way. Generally,
I feel I get a more solid install by downloading the setup, and then running it later. It is an option in Internet Explorer to do it this way.
