My Start Menu has developed an interesting problem with the items on the "fixed" part, such as My Computer, etc. When you pause on My Computer, for instance, the hint appears but no submenus. When you right click, nothing happens.

The variable part of the StartMenu (programs) seems to work ok. Just the items on the fixed part.

This seemed to begin when I replaced the 1800+ processor with a 2800+ processor. This isn't a critical handicap, but it is puzzling. And, it's a problem that I've never seen before.

BTW, the right mouse button seems to work fine every where else.

A puzzler OldBob, but I don't think it has anything to do with the processor. I recently did exactly the same 1800+ > 2800+, admittedly with a new mobo too, but no side effects.

You could try running System File Checker .....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space after 'c'.

Right-click taskbar, select "Properties ". On the Advanced tab, select which Start-Menu items you want to expand.

    OldBob ...

What happens when you click on the Start menu's "My Computer "? Does Windows Explorer open at "My Computer "?

To expand on Rambler's suggestion, try this:
    • 1. Right-click on the Start button, and select Properties.

      2. Click the Customize... button, then the Advanced tab.

      3. Scroll down to My Computer and select Display as a menu (I'm guessing that you had Display as a link selected).

      4. OK your way out.
Now, when you hover over "My Computer" you should get a menu displaying all the drives on your computer. Clicking on any of them should open Windows Explorer with that drive expanded.

In XP, the default setting for "My Computer" on the Start Menu is "display as a link ". Normally, if one right clicks on "My Computer" you get a popup menu beginning with "open, explore, et" and ending with "properties ". I liked it like that. At present, NOTHING happens when I right click on ANY start menu item... including the items in the "All programs" menu. Also, I can't drag menu items around .... wait a minute ... hold on, I'm going to check something.

OK .... I found the problem, I had disabled "dragging and dropping" in the start menu properties ... All is well again.

    Thanks to all

I'm lazy. I don't even display "My Comp ". I make a shortcut to WE and drag it to my QL bar right before the "Show Desktop" icon. So, one click, and I have my file tree.

OldBob, don'tcha just hate when it is one little itty bitty thing that keeps things from being "right "??? Thanks for posting back with your solution to drag and drop- did you get the right click problem straightened out, as well?
