Have a feeling you are getting popups from messenger service offering everything from education to enlarging body parts to prescription medication without a prescription. If so, MSN Messenger is the wrong thing to chase. You need to right click My Computer, select manage, expand services and applications, select services. Locate messenger in the right pane, right click on it and stop, right click again and select properties then set to disabled.

    Hi

No, I keep getting msn messanger(chat software) loading up in my tool bar and I cant get rid of it. I am not experiancing popups. I am sorry if I did not explain more in detail. It does not show up in the add/remove software anymore but I still have the icon in tool bar and it loads at every boot. It is also stil in the Start/Programs list. I do not want this program on my computer in any way.

Did I do something wrong? Or am I explaining wrong?

The program in question is MSN Instant Messanger 5.0

    Regards,
    FireDancer

To get rid of MS Messenger completely, go to Start>Run and type in (or copy and paste from here):
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    Click OK.

    You may have to reboot.

You're welcome, FireDancer. Thanks for posting back to let us know you got it under control.

I'd love to take credit for figuring that out but all I can take credit for is finding that solution somewhere on the net and having the foresight to copy it into my "Windows Tips" folder. ;)

I appreciate it also. It used to be that you could just go to the messenger directory and rename the **** thing. I haven't tried your trick, but I'm going to in the next few minutes. I just had a message on my server that I had to download the latest version of this *&(*&$%&* thing before I could do anything else. Messenger is a security threat, and I think that MS ought to make it optional.

OK, for all that want a better way, go to GRC.com then download and install Slay The Messenger - will permit you to toggle Messenger on and off at will.

    ;)
