Hi:...Finished reading a post on another board regarding installing Windows XP on a new machine. The responses I saw left me somewhat puzzlled!

I have bought an OEM version of WindowsXP Pro - installed, activated and running on my present machine. Hypothetical case, if for some reason this machine is totally trashed - am I not able to install and have it activated on the new system?

This just occurred to me and I don't recall seeing an answer anywhere.

As long as it wasn't an OEM disk made for a certain brand of computer like HP, Dell etc. Those are only issued for that brand computer. If you bought an OEM that would install on any computer of course you can use it again. Only one computer at a time. You will have to call the 800 number to activate, since it would be different hardware. That isn't a big deal I have had to call. Just make sure your computer is on so you can type the characters. They expect it to be activated immediately.

maggie:....sorry, I posted to the wrong forum (force of habit using Win98). In fact the CD I purchased is marked *Dell*, but I had no problems installing to my machine (generic).

But, thanks, you do answer my question. If in the future, if I do change machines, I'll have to use the 800 number.
