    Hi ;

I have Roxio Easy CD-Creator Basic version 5.3.5.10 which came preinstalled on my Dell computer with OS XP. In Nov. it will be 3 years. I have not had problem to speak off until this pass week. I record in 4x speed as I cannot play them in my pick-up otherwise.

I burned one disk and inserted another one but the only speed it would give me was 16x. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still the same problem plus adding another one. It did not display the play button so I couldn't start it .

Prior to my uninstall it decided it wanted to run at 640x 480 pixels. Although It was set at 800x 600 pixels in drive ' E' properties. I contacted Roxio and they informed me they couldn't help me. I contacted Dell and their suggestions failed to work as well.

I set the pixels to 800 X 600 but when I open the prigram it reverts back to 640 x 480 pixels. Still not record buttion.

I will unstall and reinstall ot again tonight But other then that I haven't a clue where to go with it. It does all I want when it's operating and I' attempting to get by without the 7 upgrade as I don't require all of the bells and whistle it has to burn a CD.

Anything help you might give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Oscar

Roxio and XP have a history of not playing nice together.

Best suggestion I can offer - dump Roxio and get Nero.

I have Roxio 6 and XP. About every 3 out of 5 disks I try to write lately result in "error writing to disk" or similar message. I thought that I was having a run of bad luck with disks. Could this be an example of "not playing nice together "?

I had to dump EasyCD by Roxio because it would not "play nice" with XP. When it worked, it was wonderful, when it didn't, it was a headache. Ironically, the Roxio software is what the Windows Media Player is based on!

If you DO use Roxio, make sure you download all the XP patches and updates from the site, and when you install, do it custom and refuse "Take Two ". (The updates sort of remove it anyway) Nero came with my burner, and it performs well, but for ripping and burning MP3s, MusicMatch Jukebox is better suited for the job. I use Nero for data, and MMJB for music. Just my two cents. YMMV

Interesting all the problems with Roxio, as it's the choice MS made for their "inbuilt" burner. Not that I've ever used the built in support. You did disable the built in burning support or check that it has been? This will cause problems, but far bigger ones than yours.
Clutching at straws here, but uninstall the programme again and use EasyCleaner and RegSeeker (below) to give the registry a scrub before reinstalling. Also use the Unnescessary files cleaner component of EasyCleaner as well.

The problem may be the media. Windows Media player should also be able to burn music CDs and iTunes can burn CDs. I'd use those.

I've found trying to remove WMP or disable WMP is not worth the bother. I just don't use it! If you mess with WMP, it seems to cause problems elsewhere. (Doggone XP is very integrated, you know!) Same with IE and OE. If you don't want to use them, it is better to ignore them, than to try to "uninstall" them.

Another thing I've noticed- SP1 does something bad to EasyCD Creator. The software usually works like it's supposed to, until you put SP1 on XP. Then, it's 50/50, even on a system that used it flawlessly before.

It's a shame Roxio hasn't corrected the problems- I prefer EasyCD to ALL the competition, (when it works!) It is easy to use, and explain to someone who's new to cd burning. Roxio could charge twice the price, if easycd would only work like it used to. Sigh.

I use Roxio version 5 Basic Edition updated to version 5.3.5 10n on 2 xppro systems with never any issues. I also instaled the update for version 5.3 that adds support for more and newer cdrw drives.

I also have disabled any Windows Media Player CD burning settings, copyright protection stuff and digital media protection.

And I have found one of the keys to a faultless Roxio install and usages is to NEVER install Direct CD. One can do a custom install and deselect this feature. It's completely useless and unneeded, and if one needs to use a context menu drag+drop explorer-like cdr backup then are are better alternatives out there.

    I also remove Roxio from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run.

The ONLY problems I have ever encountered using Roxio were due to bad media. I accept the fact that if I buy a 50 pk of CDRs then about 4-5 discks will be bad. I can live with that ratio.

    Johanna,
My experience with using 3rd party burning software is that you must untick the "enable CD burning support" in Windows XP/2003. Right click the CD-RW/DVD-RW icon in windows explorer. This is also documented by the 3rd party applications.

You are not attempting to uninstall the MS (Roxio) built in support, just turn it off with a tick of a box to avoid clashes with alternative burning programmes, similar to trying to run InCD and Direct CD/Drag and Drop on the same PC.

It also has absolutely nothing to do with WMP (Windows Media Player) I would never attempt to uninstall integrated Windows software of the like, other than remove the icon and start menu links if i didn't want to use it. Actually I think WMP 9.x is a usefull application and possibly the best available. (certainly when compared to Real 10)

If you haven't turned off the built in support and are running a 3rd party burning programme without problems, then I suggest you go and buy a lottery ticket, as you are a very lucky woman! ;)

I can burn with Nero, MMJB, XP itself (which, for music files is WMP), and on a good day, easycd by Roxio. I have never disabled the XP support- so I'm headed off to buy Powerball tix! :D

Never had any luck with powerball (or Tattslotto) over here in Aus. Let us know how you go!:D

Try unticking the built in support from the recording tab on the Rclick options on your CD drive icon and see if Roxio EZCDC runs any better.

Paul, I like that program so much, I'm going to try your suggestion and reinstall it soon. I never did put it back on since the last reinstall. I have Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum Retail. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the tip.

Would you kindly elaborate on that? It is past 2am, and my eyes are tired from reading help, which doesn't seem eager to help me do any of those things...

    Johanna,
Make sure you update Easy CD Creator 5.0 via the Roxio site to I think from memory 5.3xx? It is not fully compatible without the later updates but will install fine. Remember not to install the application "Take Two" as this is not compatible with XP. If you don't remove this programme on the original install of 5.0, subsequent updates will automatically uninstall it. I gather you realise you can't have two Packet writing programmes installed either. So if you use say InCD and want to continue using that then deselect DirectCD from the install options, etc, etc, and vice versa ;)

Sorry to kind off hijack this thread, but you seem to be so deeply into burning I kind off can't resist asking.
I have been using the old Nero 5.5 up to the last update und really had no problems in burning my Audio CD copy's for the car, but to my horror when we went on Holidays over Easter they played up something terrible playing in the car while driving. They all play ok at home.
Reading all your burning issues made me wonder now, as I had thought it was my player in the car.
I have Nero 6 now on my XP Pro dual booting still have 5.5 on SE.

I have Roxio 5 Platinum with all upgrades and Nero 5.5 Bundled Edition installed on my XP computer. The trick to installing both is to only install one of the Packet Writing Programs; either Direct CD or InCD, but not both.

I have no problems whatsoever. I just use whatever media is on sale and always have. Only once did I have a batch that acted up. But as far as burning, if I have a successful burn whatever I burned plays in whatever it needs to be played in. I've never had something not work.

But you may need to slow down the burn if you are having problems. Remember, factory OEM disks are stamped.
