Hey Johanna: Yes, I do video editing. I have a MiniDV camera and do the kids sports, One in baseball and one in soccer. It eats hard drive space. One hour of video can take up 12-15GBs & I have a bunch of them. Trouble with Video is time. To transfer an hour of video to an AVI file from MiniDV camera takes an hour. Real time transfer. Also, can take double that to have a finished movie recorded to DVD and ready to play on a DVD player.

But I think it is worth it so my kids can show themselves in sports action to their kids.

I just can't imagine the man hours and gigiabytes it takes to make a computer generated movie like Shrek. Must be thousands of each at least.

I don't use all that space, but I have dedicated indvidual drives for Video, Photos, Documents and backups. I keep it all separate and redundant. So I have at least two of everything. I figure eventually I will fill them up. As a matter of fact, I just ordered a firewire HDD enclosure, I have an unused 40gig drive just laying around, I figure to Bacup all that stuff and take it to the garage, so if the house burns down, computer and all, I'll still be able to get back in business with the new computer the Insurance Company buys me.

Anyhow, Jim is right, OEM means you don't get the pretty package, cables, mounting screws or software. I have nothing but OEM drives in this machine.

I don't know anything about SATA, but with ATA, native Windows XP will format and assign drive letter in Computer Management. That is the way to go with ATA, do not use MFGs software.

My experience with MFGs (Maxtor's MaxBlast) software was not good. All worked fine until it came time to fix something on the drive, I don't remember what, and nothing would fix it, including advice from this bbs until it was revealed that I had used MaxBlast. Microsoft's tech support told me that MaxBlast formatting had installed a drive overlay and the drive was not fixable by ordinary means.

I don't remember all the details, but the problem with drive overlay was confirmed on this bbs. It was recomended I do a low level format. Like a lot of other stuff, I don't remember how I did it. Of course, I lost everything on that drive.

So, do some research on that issue. Probably plenty of experenced SATA users on this board. Maybe start a new thread on formatting SATA.

    Newt ...

Thanks for the info. I'm NTFS all the way, but don't think I've ever had occasion to use chkdsk /r.

    Martin ...

I have one retail and three OEM drives in my box, and you're right ... the WD software floppy came in the retail box.

    Johanna ...

Not to worry if you buy the OEM hard drive. All of WD's software is downloadable from their website.

Boy, talk about getting off topic................

Jim, what was on that floppy? Is it like MaxBlast and used to add, format and partition the new drive?

If so, did you use it for that purpose?

I learned through bitter experience that is not a good idea.

    Martin ...

The floppy contained WD's Data Lifeguard Tools, which are diagnostic, rather than prep, utilities. They're downloadable from the link in my previous post.

I can vouch for all of WD's support tools. I have used them, and some of them work on (gasp!) other brands, as well...

Martin- ahhh...now I understand the need for so much hard drive space! I'm not using video yet, though, as fast as these 4 kids are growing, I probably should be!

Check out my shopping cart in Hardware.

    Johanna :)

    Thanks jim.

Johanna: I looked at it earlier this morning, too early for me to form any opinions. Read Reboot's post, he should float you a low interest loan. I'd buy all that stuff if money was no object.
