    IBM Aptiva Model #2170-190
    Windows 98SE
    Acer MB
    Athlon 500 MHz Processor
    Bus Speed 100 MHz
    256 MBs SDRAM

    Hi,

Every so often on a cold boot, I get a error message screen come up with the following message

    0253568 KB Memory Good
    8192 KB Shared Memory
    8127 CPU Clock Mismatch
    8162 Equipment Configuration Error

It directs me to the Bios Setup, But I have scoured every inch of it and I don’t see any option for adjusting the CPU/BUS SPEED or Multiplier. This started happening a few months ago and I haven’t installed any new hardware. If I click on enter, windows loads normally and runs with no problem.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Ken:confused:

Your motherboard battery may be dying, and the settings could be getting lost. It looks like a large watch type battery.

Replaced the battery and went into the bios and set everything as default per the IBM user guide. Funny thing, the error still appears. When I pull up BELARC ADVISOR, at times is shows it as a 500 MHz Processor with a 100 FSB, then on other reboots, it shows it as a 333 MHz Processor with a 66 FSB. I'm wondering with this system around the 5 year age mark, if it is starting to have problems with the power supply. If the PS is acting iradically, could it be sending the wrong voltage at times to the motherboard??

    Thanks,
    Ken:confused:

You can check voltages and CPU ID/speed with Aida32 - in my sig or with it's successor Everest

    Hi Ken,

Here is the IBM support page:
    http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/
Type the model number into the "quick path" section.

There is "troubleshooting power supply problems" if you have access to a voltmeter.
The power supply is 145 watts, if you have a lot of hardware it may well be overloaded. If you are thinking of changing the PSU, it may not take a standard PSU replacement. Post back and I can check that the power connector pinouts are standard.

Just to check, the "Acer MB" is the original motherboard.

What it says for that error message:
'Check CPU speed and system board DIP switches. See "Machine Type 2170 System Board Jumpers and Connectors" on page 145 of The Hardware Maintenance Manual...'
The Hardware Maintenance Manual is a 5.2mb download.

There is a lot of information under "Tips and tricks ".

    MATTMAN,

Thats a lot of info, thanks, I was working on a guys pc that i work with and gave it back to him after cleaning it up a bit. He is just using it for his kid and is thinking of getting a newer one. I found the dipswitches and played with them and then reset it back to the default setting and the PCU showed up as 500 MHz, the next day after running Belarc advisor, it should it as 333 MHz. I will download the manuel and maybe do a little more work on it, I love a challenge. All he has is the original equipment that came with the system, floppy, cd rom and hard drive. I do have a voltmeter and will try that option.
    Thanks again,
    Ken:)

Power supplies are a frequent source of unexplained errors, and they are inexpensive. I would replace it and see what happens. Voltage ≠ power.

I have to go out for a while, but I will check those connector pinouts when I get back.

I have to go out for a while, but I will check those connector pinouts when I get back. Meanwhile, have a look that the PSU is a standard "shape" (size etc) and the bolt holes match with standard.

Power connections match. A standard PSU will work (as long as it fits). If you are not sure that the PSU is the problem, you could test using one from another PC.

    Thanks Mattman,
I told him just to keep and eye on it, if it is the power supply and it's on it's way out he will no it. Thanks for the info on the connectors, I will pick one up at a computer show coming up soon.
