Sorry for the somewhat naive question -

I have Netscape 7.1 and Windows XP Professional. I have two harddrives on my computer with the second partitioned in 5 drives (10gb). I originally installed 7.1 on drive D (1.9 gb) and low and behold (duh?!), I have filled up that drive with all of my saved mail etc. I keep getting the message that drive D is full and I need to delete something.

I think I should reinstall 7.1 on drive C where there's at least 14gb of space available. How do I do that without losing all of my saved email, bookmarks, etc? Called Netscape Tech support and they said they wouldn't help me because 7.1 wasn't installed on drive C.

    Help?

    Thanks so much,
    Leslie

    Welcome to the Forum, Leslie!

    Hi Leslie,

Do you have other programs installed on the D: partition with Netscape Mail, and where is Netscape installed? I ask because it is really hard to believe that anyone could have accumulated enough messages to fill a 10 GB partition. Look at your Mail Account folder, and tell me the size of that folder. It will be located here:
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\mailaccount

To fill a 10 GB partition with Mail, you would have had to accumulated 10,240 MB of mail, and I find that highly unlikely.

Hi Ramona - Thanks for your reply. The folder you were asking about is this: C:\Documents and Settings\Microsoft1\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw\x2hgx2oh.slt\Mail. You notice that its found on the C: drive. It has nothing in it. The folder that is overflowing is this one: D:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\Users\rosarw5. It has 1.08gb in it of saved mail and bookmarks.

I think you misinterpreted how our 10GB second drive is partitioned? Its partitioned into 5 drives hence each drive is a little less than 2 GB. So as you can see, drive D: is definitely almost full.

Now that I see that there is nothing in the file that you asked me to find, I wonder if we have the whole thing installed wrong?

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

    Leslie

    Hi Leslie,

I did incorrectly interpret your partitions, as being 10 GB each, rather than 2 GB.

Your Profiles folder for Netscape 7.1 is in the default location on the C: drive.

However, the path that you posted on the D: drive is not a Netscape 7.1 Profile. That is a Netscape Communicator 4.7x Profile? So do you have both Communicator and Netscape 7.1 installed on D:?

Oh boy - What a mess! Yes, I have 7.1 AND 4.76 on the C: drive AND I seem to have 4.77 on the D: drive! How that happened I don't even know! I think we were thinking of having all of the mail reside on one separate drive but now it looks like we've really ******* things up?

Thanks again Ramona for helping me figure out this mess -

Hi again everyone - In my last message, I told Ramona that I seemed to have more than one version of Netscape on my computer as she suspected.

It seems like my messages are being saved to an old Communicator file instead of the new Profile created in 7.1. I guess my question now would be:

How do I get my messages saved to that new Profile? AND
How do I move all of my old folders/messages to that new Profile?

How do I delete those old versions of Netscape without messing things up?

    Thanks again -

    Leslie
(really afraid of losing all of my preciously organized and saved email)

    Hi Leslie,

You aren't going to lose any of those messages, but I do need a bit more information from you.

    - the full path to the mail account folder to which you want all your messages moved.

    - Is there existing mail in the mail account folder now?

    - I need you to look in each Communicator Mail folder, and let me know if both contain Mail: 4.76 & 4.77

Me again - I guess I would want it to be in that default folder for 7.1? This one: C:\Documents and Settings\Microsoft1\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw\x2hgx2oh.slt\Mail. There is currently nothing in that folder.

No mail in 4.76 on the C: drive. All mail that I want to save is in the following locations:

    D:\PROGRAMFILES\NETSCAPE\Users\rosarw5 AND
    D:\PROGRAMFILES\NETSCAPE\Users\rosarw

This is what is filling up my D: drive.

    Thanks -

    Hi Leslie,

First you will need to set up a Mail Account in Netscape 7.1, if you haven't done so. This page will give you an idea of the information you will need: http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7mailacctsu.html

Once you have set up your Mail Account close Netscape, and Quick Launch.
Open Windows Explorer and go to your Communicator Users folder and make a backup copy.

Once you back up the Users folder:
Copy the files with NO SNM extensions in the rosarw5 Mail folder.
Paste these files into the Netscape 7.1 Mail Account folder.
If prompted to overwrite existing files, answer "Yes ". There are no messages in the newly created acccount, so there is no danger of overwriting any messages. The Mail Account folder is located here:
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\mailaccount

Now, the question is, do you wish to move the mail in the rosarw Communicator Mail folder to the same Profile, and same Mail Account in
Netscape 7.1? If so, this is what you need to do.

This will be a bit different than moving the first mail, as now there is Mail in the 7.1 Mail Account folder. In order to avoid overwriting this Mail, you will need to rename the Mail files in the rosarw Communicator Mail folder as:
Inbox to OldInbox, Drafts to OldDrafts, etc. By doing so you will not overwrite the existing files in 7.1. Once you have renamed the mail files, then copy, and paste them into the 7.1 Mail Account folder.

Open Netscape 7.1, and you will be able to view your Mail files.

Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Ramona - Thanks. Before I get started, I want to make sure that I don't already have a Mail Account. When I searched, I found no folder with *mailaccount* in the file name. All I have is this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Microsoft1\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw\x2hgx2oh.slt\Mail. Is that the same thing?

We currently have two email accounts set up in 7.1 and both of their mail is saved in that folder from the D: drive mentioned above.

I didn't want to set up another mail account that would override what I already have set up?

The rest of your instructions sound fine but before I do that, I want to make sure I'm copying the mail into the right place. Don't want to make the same mistake twice!

    Thanks -

    Leslie

Hi again - One more thing:

You said not to copy any files with SNM extensions. I don't see any files with that extension but I see lots of files with the MSF extension and I was reading your instructions in Netscape and Mozilla Solutions and those instructions said not to copy any of those files either?

Just want to make sure -

    Thanks -

    Leslie

    Hi Leslie,

On the C: drive, if you have set up two Mail Accounts in Netscape 7, then the path to the Mail Account folder would be :
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\pop.earthlink.net
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\pop.earthlink-1.net
    Using Earthlink as an example

If you're actually using Netscape 7.1 for Mail & Newsgroups, I don't understand how the Mail winds up in the Communicator Mail folder? Are you manually copying the mail there? In your first post you said you installed Netscape 7.1 on the D: drive, but when I asked you to list the full paths, you said Netscape 7.1 is on the C: drive and Communicator is on the D: drive.

When you installed Netscape 7.1, the install normally converts the Communicator profile data automatically. Did this not take place?

Sorry for so many questions, but what you are telling me is very unusual, and I need more information.

No problem for the questions. I think what we did was unusual and obviously as I see now, the wrong thing to do.

For each email account, under Server Settings, the Local Directory that the mail is going into is something like this:

    D:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\rosarw5\Mail\mail.ifms-jfm.org

I think we set it up that way purposely thinking we would keep the mail folders where they currently were when we installed 7.1. Dumb, huh?

As I'm looking at the different Server Settings, I can see that the News server has the correct Local Directory:

    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\MICROSOFT1\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw\x2hgx2oh.slt\News\host-news.lafn.org

I'm assuming before I do the copying, I need to change those Local Directories?

    Leslie,

This is what you need to do, if you want your Mail on the C: drive:

If Netscape 7.1 is installed on the D: drive, then from the Communicator Mail folder:
    D:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\rosarw5\Mail\mail.ifms-jfm.org
    copy this folder: mail.ifms-jfm.org
Paste the folder in the Mail folder here:
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\MICROSOFT1\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw5\x2hgx2oh.slt\Mail

I'm basing this on the information you gave me, saying that there was no Mail Account Folder on the C: drive.

Do the same for the rosarw Mail Account.

Next: open Netscape Mail & Newsgroups
Click on Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
In the right pane, scroll down to the "Local directory" section
Change the Local directory path to the C: drive Mail Account Folders:
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\MICROSOFT1\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\rosarw5\x2hgx2oh.slt\bMail\mail.ifms-jfm.org

Do the same for the rosarw Mail Account.

    Finally back

Hi Ramona - Sorry its taken me so long to say thank you. I didn't have a chance until today to follow your instructions and make the switch. It worked fine; thanks so much.

One more question: I have those other two versions of Netscape on my computer, how do I get rid of them? I know I can just delete the .exe file but that won't get rid of all the ancillary files, right? So... what do I do?

Thanks again so much for your help.

    Hi Leslie,

No thanks needed, I'm just happy that everything is working as it should! ;)

You definitely should not delete the exe file. When you want to uninstall a program, it should always be installed through the Add/Remove program:
    Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove
    Select: Change/Remove to uninstall.

    Last time, I hope!

Hi Ramona - I already tried that but those two programs don't show up in Add/Remove Programs. One is on the C: drive and the other on the D: drive. Perhaps I shouldn't worry about them and just leave as is? I just thought I'd try to do a little cleanup on my hard drives.

    Thanks again -

    Leslie,

What you might try, and sometimes helps, is to reinstall Communicator 4.76 and 4.77 on top of the current install. This could add the missing files. It will do no harm to try it, and may enable you to uninstall both programs. Just ensure that you reinstall in the correct location.

    Ramona :)
