shut down problem quite often

Hi, I have win98SE.My computer frequently hang up while shutting
down.When dialog such as wINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN dialog comes that time hangsup and I am unable to shut down.But this problem is something different with that of others.Because this problem is of intermittent nature.Sometimes if shuts down and sometime it hangs up.What may be the reason?Pls advise.

Have you been through the Windows 98 shutdown troubleshooter. About the same thing here but more instructions for doing things. Have you cleaned out spyware/malware? Done any online virus scans? Does it happen after using particular programs?

Thanks for the advice for this problem. I am trying to resolve the problem as per ur directions.It may take time to post my problem during troubleshooting.

Since my problem is of intermittent nature i.e. It hangs up once after 10-15 times shutting the windows.I may assume that any program do not close properly,so I have to keep watch and attention to program which is run by me.

If troubleshooters solve my problem,I shall cerainly call you.Thanx.

Hi Dave Sir,

In continuation of my shut down problem, I was running the program of Norton System Work Anti virus for optimization of my PC performance.When the defragmentation of HDD was complete,I shutdown my PC operating START_SHUT DOWN_SHUT DOWN switch .But my screen hangup showing Windows is shutting down. I waited for 15 minutes ,it did not shut down.There was no other option than to press the restart button from CPU.
Kindly suggest me What to do getting rid of this problem?

What steps have you gone through in the troubleshooting guide?

 

Hi DAVE Sir,
I have tested windows shutdown through START-SHUT DOWN=RESTART. It shut down properly.Not only this time but always it shuts down properly. Whenver I run the program of outlook express it hang up while shutting down.Last day as mentioned I was running norton system work for defragmentation of HDD.Everything went alright but lastly It hang up while shutting down.

I am using firewall and norton antivirus in my comp.I did not find any spyware.

Rest of the test such as Bios update or registry checkup I am afraid of doing these tests because of little knowledge of comp.
Of course,another problem is there but that is not in this subject.
What happens,sometimes my computer screen starts shrinking from the top as well as from the bottom of the screen.This also happens sometime.Duration and time is not certain.

whereas shutdown problem concerns,it is also uncertain.It may or may not.Only GOD knows when it will hang up.

Kindly guide me step by step to resolve this problem.Thankx.

One thing I forgot to mention.In continuation of my last post ,I would like to mention that when I took the help of troubleshooting in Help on the subject" shutdown and startup troubleshooting ".I found that page is blank.

Do this and paste the results of the bootlog file here please. Also do as many of the 15 steps on that page as you feel comfortable with and tell us which you did not do. Check for updates to your video drivers. If you don't know what you have you should be able to identify it with Everest systems information.

I am posting this after a long time ,reason being I was watching the problem carefully and all the troubleshootings.As you know I am beginner I do not want to disturb the settings so that I may put in trouble. My problem is automatically vanished.For many days I did not find the shut down problem and I did not do anything.I, only, checked up the steps as directed by you and I found everything intact. Since my shutdown problem was rarely,may be due to some closing the window or program.But now a days it is working alright.Thanks for the co-operation you shared with me.
