Ah, the mysteries of Windows! My tabs are somewhat different than yours, are you running Pro? I have Home, and no Backup tabs anywhere. Double sigh....

    Hi, Martin,
I have Pro, too, and my tabs are just like Jim described, down to the absence of the tabs in disk managemnt (So, no, Jim, you didn't tweak it out, unless I did, too, unknowingly! )

    Martin,

No backup by default in XP Home. Can be installed manually, but if I remember right, disables system restore (which you don't use anyway).

Manually creating the backup utility doesn't interefere with SR, but there is no ASR available with Home Edition. A possible alternative is ERUNT for system files. Your partitions ought to protect your data files, but when in doubt, burn a cd...

Dave, I was aware it could be installed manually, but as I remember it, I intended to do that, then, I read all the documentation and the tag line I remember most was: "you can install it on XP Home, however it won't work" or words to that effect.

And since I use Drive Image, (apparently recently aquired by Symantec, much to my distress) and make redundant copies of personal stuff on separate dedicated drives, I just don't see the need for a backup of backups of my backups. Of course, I'll probably regret it someday, for now, I'm satisfied that if anything goes drastically wrong, I am confident I have the ability to restore the system.

In the meantime I have re-enabled System Restore on "C" only which for the most part holds only the OS. I figure it could be used as a quick fix on boot in safe mode. So I feel relatively comfortable and safe, never mind what Johanna says about Catastrophy. :D I think she is just jealous. :p

Oh, thank goodness! I was beginning to think I was suffering from senile dementia! (Perhaps I am, given yesterday's gone, gone, gone... post. :D)

    Martin ...

Symantec bought PowerQuest in December 2003. I was as distressed as you when I heard about it, but I had a lengthy email exchange with a tech support rep just last week about a matter concerning Drive Image 7 ... he was prompt, polite, and quite helpful.

Yeah Johanna, when you said you were shopping, I suspected you were looking at a 64, you had mentioned it before.

Just trying to make Catastropy look bad? Careful, she is pretty independant, and you know she has a bent for revenge!:D

Problem is she'll probably take out her jealousy on me.

Only one SATA drive? How chintzy can you be?:D

I sure hope you follow through and actually build the beast, 'cause I'm getting the itch and it would be nice if you were the pathfinder.

That video card sounds awesome too.

I gotta quit this before I turn too green.

    Luna Lass ...

I figured you probably meant "less than ", which is why I phrased my question the way I did. I never can remember which symbol (><) means which, so I try never to use them, assuming that others may be as confused as I am.

Sounds as though you'll have a screamer when you get done, but I didn't see any mention of a $$ figure for the OS ... you are going to install XP Pro, aren't you? Or, are you going to transfer your existing XP Pro to the new machine and install Win98 or Me on your current computer?

If I had a dollar for every piece of software I've bought in the past 17 years, I'd be well on my way towards the cost of a new computer. :D

Huh, if I had the money I spent on hardware and software in the last 7 years, I wouldn't need a computer, I could hire a clerk to do all the work.

Trouble is, just when you get to the point of being on the cutting edge, somebody moves it.

    That's why I didn't mention hardware ... if I had, I'd have a new computer.

Trouble is, when they move the cutting edge it leaves you bleeding ... in more ways than one!

Martin, all told, I'm only using about 20 gigs on a 40 gig hard drive. I have many many music files. For me, 80 gigs will be huge! What on earth do you need that much hard drive space for? Do you do video editing, or something? Just curious.

This is th hard drive I was looking at, but what does "OEM drive only" mean? I'm confused.

And this is the heart of the beast. What do you think, guys? Should I put my shopping cart on the hardware forum and run it past the techs?

    Johanna ...

OEM, sometimes referred to as "white box ", means no retail packaging. So, with an OEM hard drive you get no cable and no mounting screws (big deal!). You should, however, get WD's setup software.

Remember Parkinson's Law? "Work expands to fill the time available." The computer corollary to that is "files/folders expand to fill the hard drive space available ".

I've gone from 4GB to 8GB to 20GB to 40GB to 100GB (two WD1000JBs in a RAID 1 mirror), plus two additional WD1000JBs ... one for video editing, and the other to back up the RAID array. I'm comfortable for the moment. :D

Jim - the major difference you see between /f and /r is certainly the surface check. And with FAT32, that may be the only difference.

I have a new 2K-pro system that the setup folks goofed on and gave us as FAT32. Chkdsk on it simply said verifying files & folders.

Converted to NTFS and ran chkdsk /r

Verifying Files (step 1 of 5) I think /f only gives 3 steps
Verifying Indexes (step 2 of 5)
Verifying Security Descriptors (step 3 of 5)
Verifying File Data (step 4 of 5) This is the extra step besides the surface check
Verifying Free Space (step 5 of 5)
