Since installing Publisher 2003, any attempt to use Adobe Reader 6.01 causes Windows installer to begin to install Publisher.

I have removed & downloaded newest free version of adobe reader. Also downloaded any pertinent updates to Publisher. Have checked microsoft knowledge base and adobe reader for known issues with no success. Any help appreciated.

This is not a common problem, AFAIK. I have both Adobe Reader 6.01 and Publisher 2003 installed with no conflicts.

Something is messed up. Suggest you find a *.pdf file in Windows Explorer and right click on it.

Should say at the top of the right click menu 'Open with Acrobat 6.0'

If it does not click on Open With > Choose Program, highlight Acrobat Reader and tick the check box 'Always use the selected program .....'

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but that apparently wasn't the problem.

I tried again to solve the problem by removing both Adobe Reader 6.01 and Publisher 2003. Downloaded and reinstalled Adobe Reader, which works properly as long as Publisher is not there. Reinstalled Publisher and the problem reappears. Both programs appear to be installed in the correct locations.

Anytime, Adobe Reader is accessed -- by clicking icon on desktop, by double-clicking a .pdf file in My Documents, or clicking a .pdf link in a browser -- Windows installer begins to install Publisher. I have to click cancel three times before the installer disappears and adobe reader loads.

Unfortunately I can't locate any info. on this on the net either :(

Hope someone else will chip in on this.

As an afterthought - try letting installer run. Nothing to lose?

I've tried letting the installer run. Eventually it says that I need to insert the Publisher CD in order to complete the installation.

I'm considering removing Publisher again and this time doing a complete install instead of a typical one. Also wondered about removing Publisher installation files after installing again.

I guess this is going to be a case of 'trial and error' - sorry that I can't be of specific help here.

The idea of a totally clean install after removal of the installation files from the MSOCache sounds good - providing that you can identify the Publisher files. I have Office2003 Std + Publisher + ... and they are all lumped together. Just knocking out the Pub11N.msi file might be sufficient.

Of course you could always insert the Publisher CD when requested when letting the installer run?

Trial and error finally worked. I wish I could say exactly what solved the problem, but for future reference here's what I did:

Uninstalled Publisher, ran Norton Utilities to clean registry, shortcuts, etc., defragmented drive and created a system restore point. (without Publisher, Adobe Reader is working at this point)

Deleted all files in temp folder that seemed to pertain to adobe reader or publisher. It helped that Publisher 2003 is Office 11 but the rest of my Office components are 10.

Did a complete install (as opposed to typical or minimum) of Publisher.

Both Publisher and Adobe Reader are working properly now. Thanks for your help.

My guess is that just uninstalling Published left some registry entries hanging around, which Norton fixed.

Thanks for posting back with the 'final' solution.
