Hi. Everyone, My DVD/CD Rom drives have stopped working. Packard Bell Snapsys indicates that the drives have been removed. There is a red 'X' marking each entry in the Snapsys list My system is Windows XP Home Edition. I would value any information to restore the drives. Regards, William.

Right click on My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager - expand DCD/CD-ROM drives.

Is your DVD/CD-ROM listed there? Is there a yellow exclamation mark alongside or is the icon slashed with a red line?

Whatever - right click on the drive > uninstall. Reboot and let Windows find it again.

Even with no warning in device manager that there are problems, you should try his suggestion of removing them and letting the OS reinstall on a reboot. Can't hurt, may help.

When you boot up do any lights show on the drives? If not reseat the power cables to them or use an alternative power cable from the PSU.

Hello PeteC, Yes a light does flash. When I insert a CD into the drive I hear several whine noises and the light is flashing. This continues for about 6 seconds and then quiet. William.

Following on from your last post .....

The CD drive is recognising that a disk has been inserted. When you go into Windows Explorer can you see the disk label (title) alongside the drive icon and are you able to view the disk contents in Explorer?

If so it may be that autoplay is either not enabled on that drive or that particular disk does not have an autorun file.

Pete, When I try to view disc in windows explorer I get "Not responding" message. There is no indication about label. The disc is a game which has been loaded several times in the past. William.

Does this happen with any disk or just the game disk?

Hello PeteC and Newt, The problem applies to any disc. I spoke to Packard Bell Support this morning. The engineer was unable to make head or tail of the problem. He has arranged for a home visit by a local engineer for next Monday. For information I will keep you up to date with the outcome. In the meantime many thanks for your time and interest. Regards, William.

Hello PeteC and Newt, Engineer called this morning. He considered that the DVD/CD unit was defective. He replaced it with a new one and all is back to normal. Many thanks. Regards, William.
