    Hi,

I got my new computer today so it's time to figure out how to fix my old one (again).

Basically, my problem with my old pc is that my connection hangs when browsing with IE6.0, Netscape, AND Avant. I've tried all three and have the same problem. At first I thought it was the newest version of IE conflicting with my OS (Win98 SE) but the more I think about it, the less sense that makes.

So now I'm thinking it may just be Windows. I have Win ME so I was wondering, can I install Win ME over top of Win98 or do I have to remove one before installing the other?

I don't know if I'll actually go through with this, I'm chickenpoop!! But I'd like some input anyway.

    Thanks!

Hi serenity. Daisy talked you right into it didn't she?! :D Unless there's a good reason not to, wipe that drive and do a clean install if you're going to go to ME.

Whatcha got to be scared of serenity ? You've got your new computer. (congratulations btw) You can use it to read along...and try stuff on your "broken one ".

First up. Is it the full version of Windows ME or an upgrade?
Do ya have a boot disk?

What a waste, just paid someone to reformat it for me and now I'm gonna wipe it clean? Hmm... first I'll try IEradicator again... then I'll wipe it clean!

Yeah, Daizy got me thinking about it... I wanna be smart too!! But I gotta try a couple of things before I take the plunge. Actually, I need to get my dsl modem switched so I can network the two computers (that's gonna be an adventure for me). I should get my new modem tomorrow or the day after.

Got lots of installing to do with the new computer - so many new toys to play with!! I'll be a busy bee!

Ever thought of getting a router instead?

And yes, dear lady, it was a waste to pay someone. :) We've been RIGHT HERE, all along!:p

Does your modem have Ethernet ports?

    *edit*
And does your old computer have a NIC?

My modem is an Alcatel USB Speed Touch modem, only connections are a phone jack and a usb port.

Your other question is foreign to me!

    Know what?
I'd get a NIC and call up my ISP and get them to swap out for a modem with an ethernet connection.

A Nic's only around 20 bucks. And you've already got the router.... so...
    (What kind of router?)

Agree with Daizy 100% on modem. Get away from USB.

Revel in it, take a screenshot for later use, but don't get used to it :D (even though you have earned that much of my respect)

    Brett,
Care to join me for a while? Anyone else? I think the whole of this BBS should do it for a day!

You're having too much fun! I AM getting an ethernet modem! LOL
I have the usb one now, but since I want to use the router, I NEED the ethernet one, which is what I'm waiting on. It should be here by tomorrow.

    I don't know what a NIC is.
My new computer's router has an additional wireless thingy that will go into the old computer. Once I get the ethernet modem, I'll be all set. Won't I?

    "Win ME" ?? Why ???????

Going back to your original post in this thread, serenity:

My one-and-only-question is - "Why, in the name of anything that "resembles" progress, would you want to install WinME over Win98SE ??

IMHO " (and all of the people I know who have lived the "ME experience ") believe that WinME is barely superior to Win 3.1 only.

If all I had was 'WinME' to play with and use, my computer would probably be on the business-end of my boat's anchor rope and I would be there with it.

As to the rest of this thread - all of the above-offered advice is sound. That is, again - IMHO !

    HTH :)

Why ME? Because the only versions of windows I have right now are Win98 SE, Win ME and XP. LOL
My oldie is a Pentium II Celeron and with all the troubles I've been having with my internet explorer, I was just thinking maybe its because of Win98. No real logic, just a thought.

    serenity,

Do yourself a favor - rethink the WinME over Win98SE thing !

I'd bet you $5 to a hole in a donut that Win98SE will win any poll here on WindowsBBS !

Take whatever 'medium' you have WinME on and store it in a very, very dark and secretive place. :D
