Just recently when I turn my PC on each morning it goes through some motion but then displays the message, "Windows can't start, blah, blah" and I select Last Know Good Configuration and it start fine. Or when it fails I can use GoBack and select the last entry on the list and it will start fine.

I find the only errors to be "DCOM Error 10005 and Service Control Manager 7000." I put these errors in Google and the problems seemed to be about Password and something about software not communicating, and one entry was about AntiVirus Software.

Also recently my Norton AV loads at Turtle Speed on startup. Like it will be two minutes at least before the icon appears on the Task Bar after everything else loade. Nothing will operate until the AV finally loads.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the AV (Norton 2003), updated it and it now loads last but only in about 15 seconds. This didn't change the problem at startup.

Some time ago I had a question about DCOM and Newt chastised me for even talking about it:). Another person discussed offered suggestions. I just forgot it as I don't want Newt on my case again!

Everything else works fine, just have to start it each morning the way described above. Is there help?

EDIT: Just discovered the "Norton Unerase Wizard is one Problem. I don't use that, have the Recycle Bin to Standard so that eliminates one problem.

Mudd - if Norton has started acting quirky, my suggestion is to try a complete removal (see Here) and go with another AV program. I'd keep GoBack though - just wipe out all the restore points it has now.

Get whatever AV you intend to use along with updated virus def files copied to CD so you can unplug the broadband cable, remove Norton, load new AV software, update it, and then reconnect to the internet.

I'm still running Norton because it is working properly but if it starts giving me problems, it will go away in a hurry and in pretty much the fashion I described above.

Your advice is probably the best. However, I'm going to uninstall and reinstall one more time. I've not use the procedure or the tool in your link so this time after uninstall I'll run that.

Have used Norton's AV since I got into this PC wonder-world. I've never had a problem until now (assuming that's the main problem) and would be shedding coins as I updated for a year more just recently.

I think you Sir for the information.
