I'M SURE SOME OF YOU OUT THERE HAVE SOME OPINIONS ON WHICH BROWSER IS BETTER, MOZILLA OR IE6. I KNOW MOZILLA IS FASTER, BUT THERE ARE TO MANY SITES OUT THERE THAT DON'T SUPPORT IT. HOW ABOUT SOME OPINIONS.

Mick - I moved you to the land of the Mozilla fans. Probably a better place for informed opinions that the General Discussions section.

As a favor to those of us with older eyes, please turn your CAPS LOCK off when posting. The ALL CAPS stuff is hard to read. It's also considered the same as shouting in spoken conversation.

    Hi Mick,

To begin with, at last report, IE had 19 unpatched security holes. IE also supports buggy, insecure/unsafe, and proprietary junk like ActiveX, and Visual Basic Scripting, therefore making it a magnet for viruses, trojans, and malicious code.

    See this page:
101 things that the Mozilla browser can do that IE cannot

I'm not flaming IE/OE, just pointing out that Mozilla is the most secure browser out there today. All webmasters should support W3C coding. Netscape and Mozilla strictly adhere to the W3C Recommendations.

Post back with any further questions, and I hope that other members will chime in with their opinions.

    IE (Infernal Enema)

Gotta jump in on this one. I've been using Netscape or Mozilla for years -- since Netscape's first browser, in fact. Tried IE many times thru the years, toyed with Opera, and a few other odd balls that I can't remember just now. Always returned to Netscape.

Using Win Xp Home Ed. Use Word Perfect -- M$ Word is availble just 'cuz so many others I deal with won't try anyhting else. Use a UK desktop publisher for couple newsletters (PagePlus). It runs circles around M$ Publisher and gives some of the big boys, like Quark Express a run for their money as well -- and for a tenth the price!

I make a point to stay away from using IE at any time. If I could effectively remove it, I would. If a web page doesn't work with my current browser (Mozilla 1.5) then I close it and move on -- don't need 'em. I do this because, IE has been only been consistent in "improving" in one way: creating more and more holes for hackers to get inside our computers! All too often M$'s patches, while curing one problem, only creates one or two others.

I do not have M$ patches installed. Have been using this version of Win Xp since Jan 02 and have not suffered -- not one-- virus or worm. Have disabled about 2/3 of all the M$ so-called "services" which constantly try to "call home" and pass computer info to M$ (a worm?). Couple of spybots tried, but my fire wall stopped 'em (zonealarm, free vers.).

Have a friend who installed Sp1 and has had nothing but problems ever since -- slow, crashes, etc. Even the pro techie has all but given up on it. He's about ready to wipe it all out and try again, following my practice -- avoid M$ stuff as much as possible! We're stuck with Windows because too many others use it. I'm seriously looking at Linux.

I'm not alone on this subject. There are many, many out there that are doing the same, they're just not as loud as I am. Those that want can keep on using IE and they'll be loading patches forever as well. Me? I choose to stay with the reliable and very stable Mozilla class brfowser and not have to worry with patches and remain relatively immune to virus/worm threats.

    Just my tuppence worth.
    Bob

    Mick,

Support for Mozilla varies, depending on the types of sites you visit. As far as which browser is better for you, I have no idea. I do know that Mozilla (and mozilla-based browsers) are better for me, especially since IE is not available to me ;)

    GPaDavis,

Keep in mind that certain aspects of linux require a do it yourself attitude. Without this, linux can become a bit frustrating, since it is most definately not windows.

    Wise words

    Tranquilo,

Very wise words. Thanks. Will probably go dual boot. Too many commitments that dictate the need for Windoze. :)

    GPaDavis,

If you need any pointers in the linux direction, drop me a PM. Dual booting is common... fortunately you can still use Mozilla without any trouble. It's nice to have choices. ;)

Mozilla's way better because of the popup blocker and it doesn't download spyware.

    Hi shadowhawk,

You said "Mozilla's way better because of the popup blocker and it doesn't download spyware." I know Netscape 7.1 has the popup blocker , but does it also have the feature of not downloading spyware ?

As far as the browser go , I know when I had Netscape 6 without JAVA I had trouble with a lot of WEB pages not working until I download it again , but with JAVA and installed Netscape 6 , only then would it seem work for all WEB sites. So , when I went for Netscape 7 I went for the one with the JAVA Netscape browser. Never like IE. I only have it because Microsoft gave you no choice with Windows 98 onward and only have the updated version 6 IE , becuse a greeting card program installed it without asking.

    Thank You, RGSJR

    shadowhawk,
Now Mozilla has Adblock too, as an extension. Check it out in Extension Room.

I've been using it a while now and it makes downloading web pages a little bit quicker.

I generally don't have trouble with sites not supporting a Gecko browser (use Netscape 7.1 and Firefox). When I do there are several extensions I've installed to both (Netscape 7.1 can use many of the Mozilla suite extensions). One is "User Agent Switcher ". Just "spoof" IE6 with it. Or "IE View" which adds an item to the right click context menu "View this page in IE ". I only need to resort to them a couple of times a week and I'm surfing at least two hours a day.

    http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/useragentswitcher

    http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/ieview

The security and utility benefits of Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape far outweigh the occasional glitch on a badly written webpage (especially since there are work-arounds for that).

I've been using Mozilla for a long time now, the popup blocker is great, the mail client is great, the irc client is alright, and the html composer is also cool.

Another point to mention is that a friend sent me a link the other day, when I opened it with Mozilla (default browser) nothing happened. But, when opened with Internet Explorer (don't think I changed any security settings) I got a virus. WinXP was patched with all the critical updates.

I've spent some time with the development team of Internet Explorer / Outlook Express at Microsoft earlier this month...

As some of you may know, IE will finally have the pop-up blocker, and it will also block software installations (unless you allow it) by Web sites.

IE's development team has been newly formed, which suggests that IE development was stopped for some time (as was evident).

When we were asked by the MS engineers what the #1 feature was that we wanted in IE, the answer was TABS (remember, pop-up blocker is already there, we we're "working" off the XP SP2 browser).

As for my preference, I use both browsers. They both have their strong points...

Mozilla all the way. My son uses IE on his computer and is always having trouble with it (win98se / ie5.5sp1). Tried to load IE6 and it hung up during installation. Never could get it loaded. Why is it that MS builds programs that can't even be loaded on Windows without any troubles, yet I never had any trouble loading Netscape/Mozilla???? Plus I never had any problems with Mozilla like I did with IE. It's to the point where I won't go near IE at all. My son is now trying out firebird (haven't told him yet about Firefox) which I loaded awhile back for when I used his computer. Plus the virus problem with IE/Outlook.

P.S. I may not post too often, but I look at this site daily and to all the regular posters here, thank you so much for all your info and research. You help alot of people who come here and read only. I don't have the knowledge to post helpful replies, but sure do learn alot reading. Thanks..........
