Cannot figure out what happened to my page numbering in Word.
At the bottom of every page in a Word document I have just ....(page).
It says this in Print Preview and that's what I get printed, no page number is printed.

In View, Page Layout, The page number is displayed.

Tried everything to get my page numbering back. If it's something simple to fix, I'm not seeing it today. Do not remember messing up the Header/Footer, and cannot seem to correct this in there either.
Fooled around the in Gutter in Page Layout, but it's back to '0'.

    Sincerely,
    Steve

With word closed, try renaming normal.dot to normal.dot-old. Next time you open word it will build a new normal.dot and that may cure your problem for new documents you create.

If so, you'll probably have to manually fix any older documents that don't work right but that's not hard.

    Post back.

I wonder if the actual number of the page - assuming format is Page x is outside the margins you have set.

As you don't mention the version of Word go http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto and search the Knowledge Base for 'Page Numbers' for your version.

Alternatively a Repair of Word may fix the problem. Help > Detect and Repair.

edit note - Pete, I had to tweak your link. Any with that dang [ln] as part of the URL won't allow any treatment other than posting the thing and warning the user to copy the whole link into a browser window. Forum software just can't handle that type of URL. Dang it. - Newt

Do not see anything wrong with Word's margins--although it does seem (page) is out-of-whack somehow.

Where do I change the normal.dot to normal.dot-old?

Have not went to Microsoft's help support site yet because we always have trouble reading that Microsoft's help sites.

I am using Word for Windows 95, Version 7.

    thanks
    steve

Close Word. Start, find, look for normal.dot. Once its found, right click and rename to normal.dotold. When you open Word again, it will regenerate the normal.dot

Did this, and problem is still there.

Only in 'Print Preview' are the page numbers missing. see this... (page ).
The page numbers appear in both the Footer when viewing the Header/ Footer and in 'Page Layout' under View.

Darn. Was hoping a new (so clean) normal.dot would fix things up.

Did you try the repair of MS Office or Word (from PeteC)?

Is this happening in one doc, or all docs? If just one. Try double clicking on the "page ", if the header/footer box shows up, delete everything inside the box, close, save your doc again, close, and reopen, and renumber and see if that fixes it.

    Good Morning Everyone,

(page) is happening in all docs.
    This has become really frustrating.
Just don't know how this happened.
Maybe the darn MS Word has corrupted itself.

After I did the "˜normal.dot’ changing to "˜normal.dot-old’---I noticed that the "˜page number’ style was gone in newly created MS docs under "˜Format’, "˜Style’.
‘Default Paragraph’ and "˜Normal’ are the only ones then displayed on the left.
In the older other docs,, "˜page number’ is displayed at the bottom under "˜footer’, "˜header’, "˜line’, and the other two—‘default paragraph’, and "˜normal’ are at the top. When the undesirables are each deleted, still does not solve the (page) display problem when I click "˜Insert’, "˜Page Numbers’ again.

I had tried the suggested deleting in the Footer. Deleting in just any one Footer page takes away the page numbers altogether in that document. When 'Insert', 'Page Numbers', is done again, just get this (page) again which shows only in 'Print Preview' and on each page when document is printed.

Was always told for years to 'Search' first in these forums and see if an 'on point fix' is found before bugging anyone.
In the MS Word, MS Help, and throughout this forum's search site, I never found anything addressing this problem.

    sincerely,
    steve

Did you run the repair feature yet from previous suggestions?

No. I don't see that I have this feature.

Repair of Word may fix the problem. Help > Detect and Repair

Are you looking under the Help dropdown menu in Word?

    Alternative route ....

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MS Office - or MS Word if a standalone > Highlight > click on Change.

A box should appear with several options, one of which is Repair.

No. But that's where I thought you wished me to do.

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MS Office - or MS Word if a standalone > Highlight > click on Change.
A box should appear with several options, one of which is Repair.

I do not have a box or the "˜Change’ or the "˜Repair’.

Close word, put in the original install disk, you should get the option to repair. BTW, every repair of Office I have seen, you need the original stall disk.

Yes, I have the disc MS Word, version 7. I have re-installed, used the change option, and even tried its previous installation option selection. There is no 'repair' option.

    Problem is still there.
    Maybe a complete un-install then a re-install.
    Haven't done this yet.
Otherwise, I give up. Don't know why only...(page).... stays at the bottom of each Word doc.

    Steve
