I am not sure if this is a hardware problem or a software problem. I have a computer running on windows 98se. At present when I try to run Norton System works, neither the scan function nor the defrag function will run. Says the hard drive is not configured correctly.

However, windows scan and defrag functions will run and apparently don't see any problem with the way the drive is configured.

So what is wrong? If anything. How do I fix it?

    Thanks

    Byron

It's possible there may be a defect in your Installation of Norton System Works. Try to uninstall and reinstall Sytem Works to see if this corrects it.

    Thanks Irdreed,

I tried that. Indeed, the problem first manifested with Norton System Works 2002. But when I installed System Works 2003 I thought it might go away, but it didn't. I still have it.

Oddly we have two nearly identical computers and most upgrades and changes both software and hardware have been done to both at about the same times. But this particular problem exists on only the one computer.

    Other thoughts?

I am hoping I don't have to reformat and reload this drive.

    Thanks

    Byron

    byron59,

    Thanks for the quick response.

I thinkyou still may have a defective installation. Now that I know you had a previous version, I'm even more convinced.

Do an uninstall and then run two of Nortons programs that can be obtained from their site, called :

    SYMCLN.EXE
    RNAV2003.EXE

These will clean out all references to Norton from your machine, in order to then do a clean install. If you need further help on obtaining these please advise.
    Good luck.:)

A few years back, when NSW2001 was "new ", I was asked to have a look on a computer displaying the same problems.

The HDD had two partitions and NSW worked well with C: but wouldn´t touch D: since it was "not configured correctly" or words to that meaning.

I had a look in FDISK and the partition sizes did not add up. The sum of the percentages was 101%. I don´t know how that could happen but I deleted the logical partition ( D: ) and the extended partition. Next, I recreated them and all went well.

You didn´t mention if Your HDD is partitioned or not but this may be useful to You.

Thanks folks! I am sure all your ideas could have been right. Probably you wonder how it turned out. Reloading Norton did not help. So I followed Christer's lead and checked the drive multiple times with fdisk. Got inconsistent results. Concluded the drive was misconfigured. Don't know why.

Solved problem by reformatting and installing another old drive and copying the entire contents of my drive to it. Then I reformatted, repartitioned and copied it back. Problem solved! May not be elegant, but it did work.

    Again, thanks for the input.
