Whenever you try to open a document or create a new document in Word, the "Save as" box instantly appears and you are unable to get rid of it other than doing a Ctr Alt Del.

    Two things to try.
    1. Put in your install disk for Office. You should get the "repair "
    feature. Run it.
    2. With Word closed, search for "normal.dot ". Once found, right click and rename to "normal.dotold ". When you open word now, the normal.dot will regenerate.

    Hardware problem!

Had the same problem with a laptop running XP and Office 2000. We found the problem to be mouse driver/hardware related - a keypress interrupt to F12 (the default key for save as in Office) was being generated by either the driver (from a previous mouse) or a converter (USB to PS/2). To solve the problem we completely uninstalled all the mouse drivers, plugged the usb mouse (Microsoft) into the usb port and allowed XP to detect the device. We also took the precaution of deleting the Save As hotkey in Word. Seems to be working ok. Hope this helps.
