When Windows starts up I get the following message "

The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Windows\EMM386.exe

It finishes the startup and seems to work but I hve been having freezeup and shutdown issues that I'm not sure are connected with the message. I am a novice and would like to know as much as possible about what message means and how to fix it? Thx

Unless you are running DOS programs that file is not even needed.

Try Start/Run/ and type sysedit and put REM and a space in front of the line in the config.sys.

You have probably installed a program that sets up
    the C: autoexec.bat and config.sys files.
So Emm386.exe is being asked to load itself twice.
From the Win registry and the files mentioned.
    Click Start Menu/Run and type

    ren C:\autoexec.bat autoexec.old
    ren C:\config.sys config.old

    and reboot the PC
let us know if you can solve the problem this way -
no harm will be caused to your PC
    regards
