    Hello,

I've searched all through this forum looking for something to solve this problem and I have had no luck.

My computer starts up fine and works fine until I leave it alone for about 20 minutes, then nothing works. I can see the desktop and all the icons, but the task bar is solid black and everything is unresponsive. I've put up with this for a week and I can't take it anymore.

    I'd appreciate any advice

Hi FatBak and welcome. This one doesn't ring any immediate bells but to make sure I have it correct, as long as you are using the system it is OK but if you simply leave it along for a time, it freezes?

Do you have to power off to get things working again?

There may be entries in your event logs that give a hint or a starting place for diagnosing and curing this one. Click on the start button then on run, put in eventvwr and OK. Concentrate on the system and the applications log files and look for warnings or errors.

Also I'd suggest you do ctrl-alt-del and start the task manager. Then set it to be always on top and go to the screen that shows memory useage. Be interesting to see what it thinks is happening when the freeze occurs. Even more interesting to see if it freezes as well.

Yeah, it just freezes when it's idle.

I have to restart it to get it working again.

I looked through the event log and saw tons of CDrom errors in system, but none seem to occur when it locks up. There were some Norton Antivirus warnings and TrueVector errors and none of them were when it freezed up either.

I'll try to run repair and let you know what happens.

    Thanks

Maybe it's your ram. Ram errors can happen anytime, maybe it's just coincidence that it's happening to you while idle. Try swapping your ram with a friends and see if that fixes your problem.

    Hope this helps :)

Have you tried a System Restore to last week? If that doesn't fix it, try an SFC.

In the control panel, check your power settings (Do you have standby or hibernate enabled?)

Do you have a screensaver? Try turning it off or on and see if that changes the freeze pattern. Interesting that it only freezes while unattended.
