    Welcome to the Forum MTHatch!

    Hi MTHatch,

As you are a beginner and new to the Forum, let me first tell you that when posting in all upper case letters, it is considered shouting. It's also difficult to read, so if you would discontinue doing so in your later posts it would be appreciated.

What you are experiencing is known as the "Installer Bug" The installer fails to add the registry key needed to find the GRE folder, if a GRE folder exists. This stops Netscape 7.1 from starting.

You may experience this bug if you have reinstalled Netscape/Mozilla, experienced Registry problems, or have reinstalled Windows. This is especially evident with Windows XP users.

Take a look at this web page I have created which covers the issue:
Netscape Won't Start - Nothing Happens!

If you have more questions please post back.

    Need help

I have the same problem. Had Netscape 7.1 on computer with windows 98 then upgraded to Windows XP pro and now Netscape will not work when clicked on.

I read the page with the regedit info on the link Netscape Won't Start - Nothing Happens! and I am wondering what do you add and where do you add it?

Is this the line that needs to be added?

    "GreHome "= "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\mozilla.org\\GRE\\1.4f_2003062408\\ "

I have never added anything to the regedit so I am not sure what to do.

    Thanks in advance

    Bob

    Welcome to the Forum, Winnobago!

    Hi Bob,

You don't need to make any Registry edits. All you need to do is follow the "Workaround" instructions on the "Netscape Won't Start " page. Once you have done so, then you will be able to use Netscape again.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Finally

After re reading the page and doing the deleteion of folders I realized that netscape was totally gone from the computer. I went back to Netscape.com and looked around and found there is several different offerings to download. One, the way I was doing, using their normal D/L that does it in parts and jumps to the net for some of the files, to a complete zip file that is 28+mb.

It stated that if someone was having problems with the normal method then using the Zip file may be better. It mentioned that Firewalls sometime cause problems for the D/L but with the Zip file that sould not be a problem. AND THEY WERE RIGHT !!!!!!

D/L the zip and started it and it did everything. Even moved the Bookmarks and Mail info over from my saved files.
So back to a running Netscape. :D

    Hi Bob,

Glad to hear that you are back up and running. I'm very curious as to where you found a Netscape zip install file? Could you post the link for me.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Bob,

I thought you meant an honest to goodness Zip file. Mozilla comes with a Zip install file, but I've never seen one for Netscape.
