    Hi Rockit
Is this what you're trying to do?

    *edit*
    In short........

Put your CD in it's drive...and boot up. Wait for the instructions to "Press any key to boot from CD" . Do so.

You'll get a screen that says:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. (This is the one you want...so press enter.)

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.

Then a screen will come on asking you to agree to the licencing, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to reinstall. After you repair Windows XP, you may be required to reactivate your copy of Windows XP.

    Windows XP Pro Registry Repair

    Hey Daisy,
I don't want to reinstall win xp I just want to restore the registry when it becomes corupt by using the windows xp pro cd. I know windows keeps a backup of the registry but if the registry becomes corupt and you can't boot into windows to do a system restore it would be nice if you could boot into the cd and type a command at the repair console to copy the backup registry over the corupt one.

    Thanks for your help

    System File Checker

Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc ready.

sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

    Hiya Rockit
I stepped out of your thread after others came and offered you some great advice, but I've not seen whether you've solved this yet?

    Hey Daisy,
I guess the only way to restore the registry is to use the automated system recovery. Since WinXP has a windows subdirectory called "repair" that has a copy of the registry in it I thought there would be a easy command to use after booting from the winxp CD. Thanks for all your help.

Rockit- You have to set ASR up BEFORE you need it, and if you have Home, instead of Pro, you don't have ASR, anyway. I still think SFC is the first place to start.

    Hi there all,
Just the stuff that I was looking for myself, being new to XP Pro that's what I have dual booting with 98SE.
    I was going to ask a very similar question;
In 98SE I reguarly back up my registry by going to Run and scanregw- and into DOS if I need to go back scanreg /restore. Question if I stuff up with some problem install or delete can I go back and get myself a good copy of the registry in XP like the one in 98SE.
I assume that this is what Rockit also wanted to know.
And one more question I have done one of the Repair options and set my BIOS to Boot from CD in order to install from the Windows CD and I have left on that setting would it be wise to revert back to boot from Floppy, as I am dual booting??

    Hawk,
XP Pro has a built in System Restore for your system files. Another option you have is ASR

If you suspect a corrupted registry (or a registry error) and can still boot into windows (not in Rockits case) then the simplest solution would be to use system restore and roll back to a previous saved registry. SR has saved my @ss more than a few times. It's quick and dirty and usually solves the problem. I don't believe there is a valid reason for turning it off on the primary drive. But people do:rolleyes: and get their fingers burnt. It needs reigning in so it doesn't use gigabytes of space, but that's all. USE IT!

Another option is ERUNT for those occasions when you can boot up. Includes the optimiser in Paul's sig.
