Any idea why I can't double click on my .txt documents and read them like I always had been able to?, I make rosters, stories, schedules, all in .txt format and have never had a problem but now I have to right click on them and hit open with wordpad (which doesn't look like what I was using before) or notepad, which doesn't open it either, despite windows recommending that it is what I should use....

I can still right click and create new text documents, just can't read them without right clicking and using wordpad only....

Did I accidentally delete the .txt files default reader?

I apologize in advance for being computer illiterate :(

BTW, how can you set a page as your default home page, I'd like to make this place mine as I can definitely use some computer education....

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer....

    Keep :)

    default home page

I can only help with this default question. When you are at WBBS go to your tool bar and click Tools>Internet options. You should be at the 'general' tab. At the top is Home page. Just click on 'use current'>apply>OK. Can't help at all with other problem.

Something is busted for sure. And if you deleted or damaged notepad.exe, this is exactly the problems you'd be seeing. Easy enough to find out and to fix if needed.

Click on the start button then on run. In the line, enter notepad.exe and click OK. Notepad should open to a blank page.

If it does open, click on file and then on open and try to open a text file you know you have.

If it (notepad) does not open and the error is something like 'file not found' then open windows explorer and do a search for notepad.exe . If the error is something else, please post the entire error here.

As a suggestion, for folks who like to do lots with text files, there are a bunch of really outstanding (and free) replacement programs available for notepad. I use one called Notetab Lite and like it. One nice feature is a single-click option to convince your PC that Notetab is the basic Notepad that comes with the PC.

Hi b54life2k - Welcome to the Board :)

Notepad is the default for *.txt files in XP - it is possible that your file associations have got mixed up.

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File types - scroll down to txt , highlight it. Should say 'Opens with Notepad. If you want to change this hit the change button and select an application.

If this doesn't solve the problem, post back.

BTW - no need for apologies - we all started somewhere and are still computer illiterate to one degree or another :D

As you are new to the Board please read the Posting Rules with particular reference to # 3 - Meaningful Subject. More likely that folk will have a look if the query is obvious - and it helps when searching the Board.

Much thanks goes to all 3 of you, thanks for taking the time....

I guess it was as simple as the file associations getting mixed up, at least I learned something...LOL

Oh, and I will read Posting Rules ;)
