WinXP Home. There is a new version of IrFan Viewer, Version 3.9, available on Tucows for download. I can find it only on Tucows. But, my PC won't let me connect to a Tucows Server. I selected Texas and there are several places to get this. When I select one, it appears that I'm connecting for a second or two and then the Status Bar displays 127.0.0.1 Have tried that several times. So I go to Grouch's PC and try. Same thing happens there. I've tried their service in Arizona, Colorado, and other states. Same old 127.0.0.1.

What can I do about this? I have no idea.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. The first three links eventually end up with Tucows, so the same no, connection. The fourth, the homepage download refers me to Tucows when I click Download.

The last link is CNET and the version there is still Version 3.85. By the way, my mistake on the new Version, should have been 3.9 rather than 9.

I got this information from a Wilders Security Forum. Re-read the message and it indicated Tucows had the most recent version (3.9).

Maybe they are not ready to release this and maybe that's why I can't get a connection.

    Appreciate your time and effort.

Mudd - it ain't the site old buddy. I just went to the top link, http://theplanet.tucows.com/preview/194967.html and pulled the 3.9 app and the plug-in package.

The 127.0.0.1 address is the loopback address on your network card so when you see that, the PC is looking at it's own inards rather than out to the net someplace.

Sounds sorta like you been hijacked maybe. Use a text editor (notepad works fine) to open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and take a look. If you find any legit sites (like tucows) in there with an address listed as 127.x.x.x, it's a bogus listing and designed to keep you from ever reaching the site. There is a nasty bit of spyware that loads hosts with those null pointers to most of the sites that would offer help fixing the spyware and you may have gotten it. If so, try renaming hosts to hosts.old and see if you do better.

    Security settings???

There's a lot of scripting and cookies involved here. If I set this to high, the tuscows scripts don't run and I get no goodies.

Newts right though (as if that's a shocker) for some reason your actions are being blocked.

I was just hoping this was going to be one address or two and could be worked around by another route to irfanview.

Oh well.....I gave it a shot.

    Thanks everybody.

NEWT: Following your directions, there is nothing in the ETC Folder, completely blank.

I know I'm way over my head here so please don't loose me!

When I downloaded the lastest SpyBot, I followed some direction from whom I don't remember, but did something on Host part of it. I think I remember it did something with advertising on Web Pages. Hate to speak like this but my gray matter fails me often.

This I have in the PC. Norton 2003, AdWare, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, and CWShredder. I run all programs before I turn the machine off at night, as well as clean my temp files, history, etc.

Isn't it peculiar that the Networked PC (By CrossOver) is having the same problem? I've not found anyother URLs that are blocked. I remember trying for Tucows about a month ago for something else and couldn't get there. I believe this is just Tucows only. Is that strange or not?

PeteC: I'm saving that link. Doing things like that make more gray hair for me. I'm hoping for a miracle and not having to so there.

Goddez1: Thank you for your attention to my problem.

Thank you ma'am. That's all I wanted. If my PC don't want to connect to Tucows, so be it! I'm afraid that Newt is not going to stop at that. Before he has helped me and one day I told him to give it up, I have! No, he wouldn't hear of it. Pestered me until I had it right. Should have waited until he leaves before I sent the post...............

    Thanks for you help.

The reality is, I'm just jealous of the fact you got hair and I'm trying to get you to the same state of shiny scalp that I enjoy. :D

Actually I do have some hair above the ears - just not very much.

I've heard that older men that are bald have more intelligence than those with hair. Seems the hair takes nutrients from the brain.

If this is so, how come you are still answering questions from people with hair that don't have what it takes to know what they are doing? I suspect this is an Ole Wives Tale!!!!

I didn't mean to stop the hunt for the server block. I saw who's hands you were in and knew they'd get your mystery cleared up. I was jusr t looking for the work around route to the Irfanview.

The Tucows site does use scripting heavily and cookies besides. See:
To ensure faster and more reliable downloads, you can preset your favourite mirror site as the default from our homepage. The mirror you select as your default will be remembered via the use of a cookie, so that each time you return to the Tucows homepage, you will not need to reselect the site you wish to download from. http://www.tucows.com/ChooseMirror/choose.html

I haven't ventured into why this site would be blocked. I don't use it myself more than once or twice a year, if that. Then add on top of that all the security firewall, customized host files, adblockers, spy blockers, popup stoppers, IE Zones, Specialty IE Tracks Eraser and on and on....and all of these set to a users preference, this gets way to complicated and varied for me.

I can certainly relate to that. I allowed cookies for the site on the link you provided, click on my preference, and sure enough I can get to the site.

That was good work. Seems that of all your talents, one is finding things. How about checking why Newt got Bald so early in life?
