An improper shutdown may cause this error message to appear. Are the children shutting down properly?

    Hi Helia,
    I am going to assume that you have a Win98 3 1/2 "
    floppy boot disk ..
    post back if "no "

    - insert the Win98 floppy in the floppy drive , press the restart button on the case to reboot the PC
    - wait a while
    - type
    Scandisk C:
    - wait 'til A:\ comes up
    - type
    Scandisk C:
    - press the button to physically eject the floppy disk
    - press the restart button to restart the computer
    - let us know what happened
    regards

Merlin was not referring to a CD. A floppy disk is the thing you put into the A: drive, that small slot on the front of the computer that looks like an ATM slot. Do not call it a ATM slot in front of kids, you may find credit cards in it later on.
Put a floppy into the drive, go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs, click on Startup Disk tab, then Create Disk. When done, Shut Down. Turn computer off. Turn computer on with the floppy still in the drive.
You will see a black screen with white letters appear, use arrow keys to select Without CD rom Support and press Enter. When you see A:\> appear, type in this command and press Enter.
    scandisk c:
    Remove floppy and reboot.

I have a strange feeling about this one .....

Helia - do you have a 3 1/2" floppy disk anyware
    - not a "Windows" Floppy disk, just any old Floppy Disk ?
They are thin and square and as Mark says, fit in the narrow
slot in the front of your PC. Do you see that slot ?
If so, follow Mark's instructions - if you do not understand
    them, post back.
    regards

    Hi Helia,

Both Mark and Merlin were talking about a floppy disk. A 'startup disk', also known as a 'boot disk', and you can make one following Mark's directions.

Ok I did what Mark said to do
"go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs, click on Startup Disk tab, then Create Disk. When done, Shut Down. Turn computer off. Turn computer on with the floppy still in the drive.
You will see a black screen with white letters appear, use arrow keys to select Without CD rom Support and press Enter. When you see A:\> appear, type in this command and press Enter.
    scandisk c:

BUT there was no black screen when I turned computer back on to enter that comand it started windows normally.
I also tried in dos mode all it did was bring me to scandisk.

    SO now what LOL LOL:confused:

You will need to go into the BIOS and check the boot order. Watch the screen on startup for to enter setup press. This is often the delete key. I can't give you specifics since the BIOS control panel differs from PC to PC. Once in, locate option for startup order, boot order or something similar. Set it to floppy first, save and exit. If done with the floppy in, after exiting the BIOS, the PC will restart and should boot to the floppy with the choices Maek stated.

Pardon the interruption but I think I'll stick this microsoft link in here for the benefit of all. The references may be needed and this should save someone from having to dig them up.

    Helia,
You may wish to click through these and do a quick read so you will have a better understanding of what's going on here and what you are trying to do to fix it. These may also allow you to better describe any glitches you think scandisk may be having.

There are descriptions on what a proper shutdown should look like or be. There's links to an update for large IDE support that has a known problem with repeated "Bad Shutdown" triggers even though windows may have shutdown properally.

There's a link describing why c prompt scandisk requests a repeated "scandisk in win98 ". This usually involves a Long File Name glitch that can only be fixed from within Windows.

Etc etc...these may help to shed some light on what may be going on with your particular problem and take some of the frustration out of not understanding why it is doing what it is doing.

    Hello....Helia,

How ya' coming along on this? Been into your bios yet? You need to set it to boot from the A disk first. It isn't going to boot to the floppy until you do.

There's ways around the scandisk but you don't want to do this, or resort to this, until you find out what's going on.

Got a scandisk.log? It's in c: root or your boot sector. Perhaps a peek into this may reveal more information or at least allow you to read, at a more leisurely pace, what scandisk is throwing the fit about. You can either go there manually or do a startmenu>file find (or hit the F3 key) for scandisk.log and when found double click on it to open. Scroll to the bottom for the most current dated scan results.

I'm sorry your exact error wasn't found in the links. Odd! Still this was only meant to give you an idea or feel for what may be going on and why it's happening.

We got to run through a successful scan to clear it up. If scandisk can't fix it, in the least, we have to figure out what it is that needs fixing before other measures can be used to get the job done.

When you go into the BIOS to change the boot order, one of the first options that show on the screen is Advanced BIOS Features, it may say Advanced CMOS instead. This is where you want to go. When highlighted, press Enter to get there.
In this new screen there will be an item named Boot Order, or you may see First Boot Device, Second Boot Device and maybe Third Boot Device.
If it says Boot Order, change it to Floppy, HDD-0.
If you have First Second and Third, change the First to Floppy, the Second to HDD-0
Do not worry about Third. Just so you know, HDD-0 stands for your hard drive, and that is a zero not an o.
Note: you may need to use the + and - keys to actually change these when they are highlighted. There should be instructions as to what key to use.
When done, use the ESC key to back out of the Advanced, now choose Save Settings and Exit. Your computer will now reboot.

What does it say in the Scandisk.Log? And what is the Error?

    Ok
I did what Markp62 said yesterday and it came up again so I ran a scandisk and today it hasn't poped up so I am hoping it has fixed it.
In case it hasnt this is the erro I got

Scan disk found 360448 bytes of data in 8 file fragmants lost files fragments might be usefull files of folders but are probibly just taking space
-discard lostfile fragment and recover disk space
-convert the lost file fragment into files
    -Ignore this error & confirm
It recomended convert the lost file fragment into files thats what
    I did.

Then this came up: A program for windows itself saved informatiom to your drive after the previouse error was detected, scan disk must restart so it can include the new info & scan for errors, the error and any other errors that were previously reported but not corrected may be reported

So I am hoping it fixed it now I will post again and let you know if it has been fixed so far so good I will keep my fingers crossed LOL

    :)
