My OS is Windows 98SE, Compaq Presario 5700T, Pentium III.

I’ve written to Compaq support with this problem and they recommended I reinstall Windows 98, which I did, then installed from disk the Windows 98 second edition updates. Then I downloaded the latest Window Media Player 9 and installed it.

Before this, I could not play Windows Media Player 7.1 either. That’s when I wrote to Compaq.

    Error message ID number :
OxCOODIIBA: "Cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.â€

The sound card functions in all other things using sound, such as games, CD Player in accessories etc. And I haven’t any other program in use when trying to use WMP.

What task you were trying to accomplish prior to encountering the error message:
I was trying to play a CD inserted in my CD-ROM.
The error message comes up whenever I try to use Windows Media Player in any way.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on Device Manager tab. Double click anything with a yellow ! or ? and post the error code on here.
Please be sure to post what it is, ie type of sound card.

    Window Media Player not functioning

Thank you markp62 for your response!

I have gone to the System Properties Device Manager tab and did not find any ! or ? yellow marks. I collapsed each of the devices there to further check, but there were no yellow indicators.

This is the "type" of sound card I have:

    Sound, video and game controllers:

    ESS SOLO-1DOS Emulation
    ESS SOLO-1 PCI AudioDrive
    Gameport Joystick

To add more information that may be pertinent to this problem:

About 5 months ago I was infected with the W32@Swen virus. I downloaded an app. provided by McAfee that removed the infection. But I would become reinfected every time I downloaded my email with a new infected email, even when not opening the message.
So I have been filtering my email via WebMail, provided by my ISP.

Now I'm wondering if this problem can be caused by an corrupted file that is not being cleaned with the Stinger.

I hope someone can help with this delemma!
    :(

Try running the system file checker to look for bad/missing/etc. system files.

start~run~sfc and then pick the option to scan for altered files.

    Windows Media Player not functioning

Thank you for your input newt.
The following came up many times with different files:
"System File Checker identified that the following file has changed.
File: smartdrv.exe (about 30 different files)
    Location: C:\WINDOWS
If you upgraded this file, click Update verification information. Otherwise, click Restore file.
What do you want to do?
    ~Update verification information.
Select this option if you know the file has been updated
    ~Restore file
Select this option if you want to restore the file from your installation disks.
    ~Ignore
Select this option to ignore the warning. The next time you use System File Checker, you will be prompted about this file again.
(this is the one I chose)>
~Update verification information for all changed files.
Select this option only if you know many files have been updated and you don’t want to verify each one individually.

I inserted my Win98 SE update disk and chose the last option.
The results were 779 files added to verification data file
217 files updated in verification data file
    and 23 files restored.

    Restarted the computer.

Now, when I open Win Media Player it shows the CD I have in the CD Drive, but when I click 'play', the screen goes black and then the 'Press any key' comes up.
When I press a key the desktop comes back, but the mouse pointer is missing!
I have restarted multiple times with the same results.
When I press Windows key with Pause key to bring up System Properties, the mouse comes back.

    Boot to DOS. Then
scanreg /fix followed by (and it may take a while)
    scanreg /opt followed by
    scandisk /autofix /nosave /surface.
win D:/M (boots to safe mode) and run scandisk from there (to catch any long file name errors). Standard is fine since you've already taken care of the surface check. Then run a defrag.

Let us know how things are after all of that.

Newt made a slight mistake, it is:
win /d:m (edit note from Newt: oops. Thanks for the correction.)
What this does at the prompt is immediately boot windows into Safe Mode.
I do see a slight problem here, there has been no update to smartdrv.exe to my knowledge, it is likely the file was corrupt along with the others.
The only legitimate explanation for this is you had the first edition of 98 and installed 98 SE UPGRADE, or did you use the 98 UPDATE CD. There is a difference between the two.
Do you have an up to date AV program installed?

    Thank you markp62.
Yes that smartdrv.exe was only the first of over thrity that looked just like the sample I included.

I purchased my computer, Compaq Presario, Pentiium lll in Sept. 1999. It came loaded with Windows 98SE. It was ordered directly from Compaq and built to order. The disk came with the computer. It's titled "Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition Updates." Says "For distribution with a new PC only. For product support contact the manufacturer of your PC.

I was advised by Compaq email support to reinstall Windows 98 when I wrote to them about this Media Player problem. I didn't realize right away that I had to install the second edition with this disk. When I downloaded the update to Windows Media Player 9, and it would not install, saying I needed to have 98 SE, I then realized I had the disk to do this.
I hope this answers your question.

And yes I have an up to date AV program installed. It's McAfee
    Virus Scan, DAT Version: 4.0.4351

    Windows Media Player not functioning

    Newt,

I followed your instruction to the letter. It was long but went smoothly.

When I was done I tried to use Win Media Player. I inserted the CD, WMP showed the CD with its title, when I clicked the Play button the blue screen came up saying "A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028:C189190C in VXD DSOUND (03) + 00000BBC.
the current application will be terminated. Press any key etc.

    Window Media Player not functioning

I just ran Spybot and here are the results:

! Windows Media Player: Anonymous ID
HKEY_ USERS \DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Media Player\Preferences\SendUserGUID=8=0 Registry change (icon)

    !Windows Media Player: Client ID
    HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Settings\Client ID= registry change (icon)

I clicked button to fix and then tryed the WMP, with the same negative results.

    Any suggestions?

    dsound.vxd (directx)

What version of directx are you running?
Upgrade DirectX and see if that helps:
    http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp

Remember to shutdown all unnecessary tasks and applications, that may be running in the background, while installing anything new. Particularly your virus program (Mcaffee). These can cause corrupted or incomplete installations.
    =======
    Prior or before the above:
    Run directx diagnostic:

Click taskbar Startbutton and scroll to the run line
    Type in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DXDIAG.EXE
    hit enter
from directx popup the very first tabbed screen will have version info on it. You may wish to run though the various other checks.

    Windows Media Playeer is FUNCTIONING!

    Dear Goddez,

The new download for DirectX did the trick!
I had the download for DirectX9 in My Documents. I had installed it some time ago last year and have a vague memory of having trouble with the installation. But it seems strange that everything having to do with sound was working.
The update was DirectX9.0b, two hours to install.

Once again, BBS came through for me where other tech supports failed. You guys are all so on top of everything.
This time I was so impressed with all of you, I registered!

    Thank you, thank you all!
