I recently started having a problem signing on to my ISP with Win XP Pro. Everything starts up as normal. I get signed on, then all programs freeze up for up to 5 minutes. I can move the mouse and open up the start menus, but when I try to open any other programs, I get the busy mouse pointer for a couple seconds but no program start up. I can't even access the Task Manager via CTRL+ALT+DEL. After the delay, everything returns to normal, and any programs I tried to start up in the interim begin all at once.

I tried making a internet connection from scratch rather than allowing the ISP software doing it. I checked to see if any applications are doing an "Automatic Update ". I unchecked the "Include Windows logon domain" in the connection propertiesmenu. I even tried reinstalling Windows overtop of itself. Nothing has helped as of now. Any other suggestions???

I suggest cleaning out spyware/adware and doing some online virus scans. Spybot and Ad-aware in my signature. Use both. Immediately update after installing and delete all they find. eTrust scanner also in my signature.

    RAV

    Housecall

Open task manager to performance tab prior to connecting to view CPU usage during freeze.

    fw190lanc and noahdfear,

"reinstalling Windows overtop of itself "

I've found that some problems can persist unless you do a format and fresh install, but try everything else (within reason) first

Does this happen only when you connect to the net? In other words, if you don't connect do you still have the delay when starting programs? If so, is it only after first logging on or at anytime? Did you run cleaners and scans?

This happens only when I connect to the internet. Yesterday, I tried swapping out my modem with another modem I had sitting around. Same problem occurred. It only happens when I first log on. After that everything is fine.

Yes, I did use the Anti-Spyware software to remove any "unwanted leeches" in my system. I used Norton Internet Security 2003 with all of the latest updates and didn't find anything. I am trying the Housecall software as soon as I sign off of here.

How you doing on this? When connecting with task manager open on the processes tab and system freezes, what process, if any, is tying up the CPU? Online virus scans turn up anything? Did you act on markp62's advice and get HijackThis?

I tried connecting with the Task Manager open, but it didn't show anything hogging the processor. I used the latest update for my Norton Internet Security and didn't find anything. I then tried several online virus scans and still found nothing. I downloaded McAfee's Stinger program and still came up blank. I downloaded the latest updates for Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. It found one thing it hadn't found previously, but it didn't solve my problem. My internet service provider reply to my query about the problem. I had sent them the report from the Win XP Net Diagnostics. They said it looks like Norton Internet Security might be the problem. When I first connect to the 'Net, Norton detects it and trys to start up several instructions at once. They suggested disabling or uninstalling Norton , and then seeing what happens. I disabled the Norton software, and the one time I have tried going online everything started up with a more normal delay (modem "handshaking ", etc.). I want to try it several more time just to be sure.

I strongly caution you not to go online without a firewall- even the built in one by XP is better than none at all. Do you have yours turned on?

I use Norton Internet Security 2003, also, and the XP firewall causes conflicts if I try to use them both at the same time. Have you tried shutting off the XP firewall (enabled by default) and turning Norton back on?

Reinstalling Windows overtop itself may have compounded the problem. I think you should take the Hijack This advice so we can see what is trying to load at boot that is stalling your comp when you go online. Sounds to me like too much is loading at boot.
Try Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel to eliminate everything from your start up that doesn't NEED to be running. If you are not sure, post back, and we'll try to help you.

I already have the XP firewall disabled (I double checked just to make certain). I prefer to use the Norton firewall instead because, in my opinion, it is a bit more "powerful ".

Even after disabling the Norton software (but not uninstalling it), I am still dealing with the problem. I did notice something weird though. If I have a program running prior to going on line, it will function will normally despite the connection acting up. I did this with Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, and Netscape and they accessed the Web fine. But they still won't open regularly during that delay.

I guess I will go ahead and download the Hijack software and submit the file here.

I would suggest keeping these items from the startup.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PaperPort PTD] c:\progra~1\scansoft\paperp~1\pptd40nt.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Omnipage] C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE\opware32.exe
These are for the scanner, not necessary at startup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FUIClearHis] C:\Program Files\FreshDevices\FreshUI\freshui.exe 3 4 5 9 12
What do you have FreshUI doing that needs to be at startup?
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REGSHAVE] C:\Program Files\REGSHAVE\REGSHAVE.EXE /AUTORUN
You no longer need this running at startup, cleans up some registry entries after or before installation of software from Fuji.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMONTRAY] C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel(R) Active Monitor\imontray.exe
Monitoring of fans, temperature, voltage, etc for Intel motherboards. Only needed if you "overclock "
I would remove the above items and see if the delay is still there.

I tried these suggestions, plus several others from various support websites. Nothing was working. Finally, I found the solution in the Microsoft KB, listed at the end of this post . This article states that the problem was caused by the Advanced Network Pack for XP installed service IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall or IPv6 Helper Service. I disabled the 2 services and restarted the computer. I logged on and off the internet several times since then without any further problems. Thanks for all suggestions!

Glad to hear you got it straightened out. Man who wouldv'e thought! We've seen that cause problems before too. Now I'm gonna have to go back and see what it was, other than showing up in the event logs. And that's one of the things we didn't have you check. :( Live and learn! Thanks for sharing with us.
