I noticed that when I'm finished working with a floppy disk I'll either shutdown or restart the system the floppy drive will sound likes it's spinning for about 10-15 seconds as if it's searching for a disk. Then just before the Windows Shutdown screen appears I'll get a quick flash of what appears to be a grey End Task Dialog Box, but, because it flashes so fast I can't read it. I have NEC Floppy Drive. Is there a way to fix this. I've already replaced the drive with another NEC Drive. I'm running Win XP Pro. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I think this normal, mine has been doing this for years. I would not worry about it.

Are you running Norton AV? If so go into Options>System>Auto Protect>Advanced and uncheck the box next to "Scan floppies for boot viruses when shutting down Windows ".

This may cure your situation as it is set "on" in Norton AV by default.

Yes, sounds like an AV programme checking the floppy drive at shutdown. Several AV programmes also have this as the default setting as well AFAIK.

WOW! I've been looking for a solution to this for years!

Deep down, I pretty much knew that Norton AV was the culprit but I've never seen an option to disable this. I'll have to go look again.

I have also found clearing the recently used documents can also stop this on occasion.

Two fixes for the price of one!!!:D

I guess Norton figures it's a good idea to scan floppies for viruses probably on the assumption that floppies are moved between computers frequently. A good idea in a environment where there are lots of computers and the users constantly share floppies, but probably overkill for the single machine, home user.

Besides you would think that NAV would be smart enough to realize that usually there is NO floppy in the drive and not bother checking it!!! Not so.
