When I download updates to my Virus detector PC-Cillin I get a message saying that file APS.INF is missing and the properties cannot be verified. I have had windows ME re-installed by a shop recently after they messed up on my PC.

I do not have an ME instillation disk. How can I get this file. Is it easy?

When I have downloaded the updates can I assume that they have been installed even though I get that message. Thanks for any help or advice offered.;)

From a quick search it looks as if that file belongs to SoundBlaster
By creative products,, an audio card.

I have no idea why PC-Cillin would do that. maybe the other's here will, give them some time.

Untill then possible start the uninstall of your anti virus program and see if theres an option to repair it. Or reinstall it.
and maybe also check for driver updates for that sound card.

    Regards

Lonny. Thanks for that. The PC-Cillin prog was put in by the PC shop. I don't have the CD for it. I do have the CD for an earlier version though.

How important is that APPS.INFO file. Will it affect any other applications etc. Thanks

I wouldn't suggest reverting to an older version.

exactly what version and build do you have ?

can you contact that shop ?

run dxdiag and do all the tests to do that go start run and type dxdiag then hit enter.

also check in device manager for any exclamation points, if found make note of the error number's
right click on my computer > properties > then to device manager
if there are any red or yellow marks highlight it and select properties,, you'l see a error code there ?

Lonny, once again, thanks for that. I was doing what you suggested in the first reply when all that other astuff appeared.

I did the daxdiag. The only problems found that were reported were in'system registry'. It stated thatndetails are available in the saved text file. I checked this. Lots and lots of info but I couldn't see details on system registry, perhaps it is me.

Going inot diagnostic manager - yes I found a lot of yellow ? marks. All to do with a 42 bit scanner and a USB scanner. All had code 28.

I have had a lot of problems installing my scanner anyway.

I shall noe endeavour to follow PC Cillins instructions.

Going back to the shop I think would be a waste of time. they cocked up from the start. A long long story. To cut it short I had to get them to reinstall ME which was originally on my PC. They put in 98SE and that gave me problems. I had a rstore disk for ME but not 98SE. Very complicated.

Any ideas on the the code 28 error and probs in system registry. regards.

well lets try to take care of the first problem, then maybe post a
question in the hardware area about the device manager error codes, But when we do you need to state which device has which error code. was the USB scanner the only one with errors ?

I have them myself, cheap scanner, its not wmi complient or something to that effect, it still works its just that it wont work from within some ms products, Like works and word.

Im note sure what to think about the problems in the registry dxdiag has found , Guess we would need to know where at in the tests those were detected ?

You can in the meantime run scanreg /fix

while not conntected and with all programs that show in the taskbar closed, (becouse you will have to restart the PC)
go start >programs >accessories> msdos prompt
    and type
    scanreg(one space)/fix
    and hit enter

then after the restart run dxdiag again and see if there are any errors

    Lonny.
I ran the scan reg as directed. It only took a few seconds(was that right), it said 'building up registry'. I then restarted the PC. I then ran daxdiag as before and , sadly, the same results came up indicating problems in registry. Baffling.

have you any idea what this APPS.INFO file is? Thansk for your help.

Lonny. it did all sound very very complicated indeed.

I still get messages telling me that updates are available. I click OK and it then starts to download. The blue bar telling me that the files are installing appears and is complte to the end of the line. It is then that I get the message that the files cannot be verified because APPS.INF is missing.

This is where I am confused as I have no idea whether or not the files were in fact installed or not.

After 'downloading' etc after I then went back to PC-Cillin and clicked update now. I then get a message telling me that there are no new updates. can i safely assume then that the files wered downloaded and installed before the APPS message appeared.

Have you any idea what the 'PC' meaning of 'files cannot be verified' means.

All very complicated but I do appreciate your help.

Lets get back to the what dxdiag says about the registry Later.

    Did you do this ?
Using Windows Explorer, go to the PC-cillin program directory and create a new folder called "Source ".

By default, the PC-cillin 2002 program directory is C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2002\ source<< make that folder if it doesnt already exist

Connect to the Internet and use a web browser to visit the following address or URL:

    http://www.antivirus.com/download/pattern.asp

Download the zip archive containing the virus pattern file for Windows by clicking the appropriate link.
    3.8MB > http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/pattern/lpt857.zip
Alternately, right-click on the link and select "Save Target Asâ€.

Extract the downloaded virus pattern zip file into the "Source" directory created earlier in Step 1.

    Example:
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2002\Source\

Go to the PC-cillin program directory and run or double-click tmupdito.exe.

    Regards
    Lonny
