I'm sending this request for help on behalf of a friend who has the following problem. When she starts her computer the licensing information comes up and then the screen blanks for a short while at which point her screen saver comes up but with no desk top icons appearing---any suggestions will be very much appreciated, Marion McCaleb

Hi Marion, has your friend a 98/98SE operating system ?
If so, please tell us what you mean by
    and also ..
tell us what happens if your friend right clicks on an empty
area on her desktop, chooses Properties and Screensaver "None"
    ... reboot
    regards

Thanks for your response---this came up at a family gathering yesterday in Phoenix so I wasn't able to get as much information as I'd like. By 'licensing agreement information', I believe she meant the Windows 98 startup logo and she wasn't sure what version of 98 she had. I'm back home 200 miles south of Phoenix so communications is difficult but I'll try to contact her by phone when she's off work in the evenings to ask about right clicking on the desk top but---when I'll learn more about her problem I'll post it---thanks again, Marion McCaleb

I'm pretty sure I now know what her problem is. I believe that the line callled SHOW DESKTOP ICONS (in the pop up menu when you right click on the empty desktop) some how became unchecked. I wrote her a letter with instructions on how to correct this simple problem and asked her to get back to me once she has done this---thanks for you suggestions, Marion McCaleb
