    Hello all,

My father in law just recently tried to install a 512 SD Ram into his computer. He called me and said that after installation it only shows 128.

He runs Windows XP and from what I could understand he checked in "My Computer "-- Properties.

I'm probably going to drive up there in a few days to see what could possibly be wrong, but I wanted to hear what everyone here thought it might be.

I asked about memory count on start up but he said it's too fast to see.

Possibly something in the BIOS? Wrong memory? I would think if the memory had gone bad that it wouldn't even get to boot-up.

    Thanks for the help.

Could be one of several things .......

Wrong type of ram - easy way to check out which ram is compatible - in the absence of a mobo manual is to log onto www.Crucial.com and work through their memory selector. If you don't know the mobo type download Aida32 - it will tell you.

Faulty ram - if generic always a possibility, if named less likely but not impossible. Try running Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

Is the 512 the only stick of RAM?

Some of the latest ram needs to be installed in matched pairs.

If your father in law goes into bios the ram count can be passed by - set Quick power on self test if available. Alternatively hit the Pause key on POST - one of the screens shoes installed memory along with HD's, etc.

Another possibility is that the RAM isn't seated properly, remove it and reseat it.
