    Hi,
I am helping a friend with her laptop computer running Windows ME. She connects to the internet by signing on to AOL 9.0.

After she is connected she tries to open IE and nothing will display.

The Page does not display at all - she gets is "The page cannot be displayed/Cannot find server" Error

She is using IE 6 and we have updated all the Windows Update from the CD sent out from Microsoft. I try to get siimple pages like Google but never any luck.
I have tried repairing Internet Explorer through the add/remove programs, Deleted Stored Web Pages from
IE, deleted cookies and temp files with no success...

Does anyone have any ideas to help me determine the
    cause and the fix?

    Thanks.

    Jean

Please ignore this posting. I talked to Gateway and they had me return to IE 5.5 and now at least it is working.

I will try to reinstall IE 6.0 and see what happens.

    Thanks.

larsonjean--I have no idea what role AOL plays in the problem you describe. It is possible that your friend should see what AOL has to offer. As you may know, AOL in fact uses a version of IE as the AOL browser. They just put a shell over IE.
Also your original post suggested that just logging on to IE caused the error message. Or was it when you tried to access a site through IE?
Assuming the latter and that AOL is not at fault, one of the recent Critical Updates for IE6 had a bug that might have caused the problem you describe and so a fix for the bug was issued. Possibly that CD you used to access patches had the original bug, but not the fix.
If you reinstall IE6 and have the same problem, you might want to make sure you have the latest patches (with fix) for the bugs. You can get that either by going to the Windows Update site, or by going here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.asp
Since you have uninstalled IE6, you would have to do this anyway, if you reinstall IE6 SP1, since the various patches do not come with the fresh reinstall. Do not use that CD.
BTW--That error message you were getting can come from several different reasons, mostly involving secure sites.
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q="The+page+cannot+be+displayed/Cannot+find+server"
The message "The Page cannot be displayed" is more common and there are several different fixes for it.

Aol did talk to me about the problem the other night. The tech really worked with the problem but couldn't resolve it. He finally gave up. I was able to open IE but when I tried to access a site I received the error that the page couldn't be found.

I think it must have been that CD that Microsoft sent me with the Critical Updates. I'm not sure though as come to think of it she couldn't get on before I installed the updates. In any case her computer is working now after I reinstalled IE from the internet. Let's hope it continues to work properly.

I will not use the CD anymore though just in case it messes up some other computer.

    Thanks for your interest.

larsonjean--Don't forget to go to Windows Update for the latest patches to the version of IE6 (presumably SP1) that you downloaded and installed from the internet. MS does not update the individual versions of IE available for download. The patches have to be downloaded and installed separately.

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, I did go to Windows Update and updated them all. Thanks for the reminder though.
