I'm having so much trouble removing this virus from my system.

The instructions on the Trend Micro page work fine except for the instructions on how to remove the virus from registry.

When I open regedit, the virus closes it after a few second so I can't delete the right sections. When I try to do this in safe mode apparently a certain part of the worm isn't listed because it still is back in memory when I boot normally.

My virus scanner, PCCillin, can't remove the original copy that's actually running and it self-replicates itself when you try to end it's process. When I try to run the Windows security patches the virus shuts them down before they can complete.

I'm really frustrated. Can anyone help me remove this thing?

Click here for direct download of HijackThis. Save to a permanent folder and open. Click scan then save log. When saved, it will open in notepad. Select all and paste results here. Don't fix anything yet.

I had exactly the same problem with Agobot and managed to fix it myself . (I had it under 2000, but this should also work for XP. No idea if Agobot itself does this about 9x...)

In the list of Services there'll be one called 'Video' or something else just as dodgy. Open its properties and change its run type from 'Automatic' to 'Disabled'. Restart and that's it! The virus won't load and then you'll be able to download a remover, update definitions etc.

Scan with HJT again, place a check next to these and fix.

Reboot and delete the files in bold.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\cssrs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>System>CurrentControlSet>
Services and delete subkey driver if present.
Empty recycle bin. Disable system restore. Reboot.
Post a fresh log and do some online scans.

Using the eTrust scan, four viruses were found: Java.Shinwow.U and three instances of Java.ByteVerify.exploit -- all in my \Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\ directory. None of these could be cleaned or deleted.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related to this issue, my I get an error upon startup:

    RUNDLL
    Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll
The specified module could not be found.

    Any ideas?

By the way, thanks for the help -- the AGOBOT.FX is gone :D

See this for the Rundll error. Glad to hear agabot is gone.

For the stubborn files, try Move-on-Boot (direct download). Just install, right click the file and choose to delete on next boot. Reboot.

There are a few startup items you could do without and fix with HJT.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

And I recommend fixing this uninstalling Windows Messenger.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe "

Links and instructions in this thread.

Can you tell me what these entries are for and if I need them? I disabled them in msconfig (because I didn't recognize them as important) and I seem to be running fine.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jet Detection] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\PROGRAM\ADGJDet.exe "

Also, any way to get rid of the following entries considering I don't even use Getright?

    O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with GetRight - C:\Program Files\GetRight\GRdownload.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Open with GetRight Browser - C:\Program Files\GetRight\GRbrowse.htm

    nwiz.exe NVIDIA nView Wizard
Description: Application that allows a users to have 32 virtual desktops, get a desktop larger than the viewable area of the monitor, divide the display across more than one monitor, manage applications, and many more features.
Not really necessary at startup, but not hurting anything either.

ADGJDet.exe Added with SoundBlaster Live! or Audigy soundcards for headphone autodetection.
    Optional.

By all means! Scan and fix with HJT. :)

After removing all infected files, rescan with a few online scanners and when sure it's all clean, re-enable system restore and create a restore point. I would also clean up the registry with RegSeeker as well as clean out all temps. and TIFs.
