I recently received the MS security update CD for win98. Supposed to update to Feb. 2004. I tried to install it four days ago. I should have let 'well enough alone'. I watched it install the media player 7 (which I never use). After that, nothing but problems. It froze up. When I try to boot up, most of the time it will go to safe mode only. Other times it is just a black screen with little flashing light in upper left corner.
If I leave PC turned off for overnight, it may come up normal (like now) but I sometimes get message "advanced INF install
Error: could not locate INF file M:\content\win9x\win98\W98resume.inf "

Also, my clock gained 3 hours. go figure. Any help appreciated.
I'd hate to leave it on 24/7

The CD will reboot the computer about 2 to 3 times. Try putting the CD in and rebooting.
You ended up with WMP 7? For some reason I ended up with WMP 9 installed. Do you have 98 or 98SE?

Does the CD update WMP without asking?

Yes, it also updates Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to Version 6 SP1, does all Critical Updates, installs DirectX 9.0b. It is an update all operation.

I tried using the update CD again with same results. It worked OK till the first prompt to restart PC. It had installed Media Player 7.1 (I have win98). It never came back up again.
I used the recovery CD to try to get back to normal. It stopped installing and gave following msg. (WARNING: There were errors recovering some files. Your CD drive could be malfunctioning). PC comes up in safe mode but if I try to run anything like Registry first aid, or ad-aware, etc. PC locks up. Most of time I have to pull plug to just turn off. Right now I lucked out somehow, and it came up normal, but with same admonishment, "error. could not locate INFfile M:content\win9x\win98\w98resume.inf

I see what the problem is, you have a failed overlay install of Windows 98 First Edition. The Security CD installs WMP 7.1 for you because you need 98 Second Edition for it to install WMP 9.
Error: could not locate INF file M:\content\win9x\win98\W98resume.inf "
That message is a failed attempt to continue the reinstall of windows. There is another method as you seem to have problems with your CD. These recovery CD's copy the window setup files into this folder, C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
What you need to do is get into Safe Mode, go to Start\Run and type in Msconfig and press Enter. When the System Configuration Utility [Msconfig.Exe] opens, click on the Advanced button, put a checkmark for Enable Startup Menu. Reboot.
When the Startup Menu appears, choose Command Prompt Only. When the prompt appears, type in this command.
    c:\windows\options\cabs\setup
    This will install Windows.

Sorry it took so long to get back, but I've been swamped with problems. My PC kept getting worser and worser. Finally, it would come on for a moment, and shut itself down. Had to call in the lone ranger, (savvy son-in-law) after 4 hours, He finally got it back to the day I bought it 5 years ago. So, I've been reestablishing all my bookmarks, addresses, important documents, AV, zone alarm, etc. If I've learned one thing from this
experience,it is to back up everything I don't want to lose.
However, I still think the MS update CD is bad. When I was trying to reconnect to server, I was getting errors. Provider said 98 needed updated. I tried CD again and had same problem. It would load to first PC restart, and never finish. I reformatted again and Started over. I got back on line finally and managed to update to IE6 sp1 from MS site.
    thanks for patience and help.

That first reboot can take a long time. Do you see a little window with a drum beating and saying 'Updating System Settings' and appear to be doing nothing as the progress line does not seem to be moving? This can take a while with 98 First Edition on a new install. You just have to let it finish.
A reboot when it is doing this is fatal.
I have used that Security CD a few times, and it works very well for me. Of course, you have to follow it's advice and not have popup blockers and anti virus programs loaded at startup.
For you, it may be better to use the online update.

I'm sure you're right, but one thing I didn't mention was that in middle of updating, I had power failure. Elec was off few hours.
Not long enough to melt the ice cream, or warm the beer, but long enough to ***** up my PC.

I used the CD on XP Pro and it worked fine, selecting what I wanted like WMP 9 and security updates but not the Automatic update I think this would be Suicidal.
