    Hi all,

This is a long post so thanks for being patient with me.

I installed the Nestacpe 6.21 browser, trimmed down version from Sillydog's site and played around with it including testing many of the feaures ot it. The browser ran like a dream , no problems with the installation, or with it running. I also installed the Sun java plugin for it so as to have java ability. No probs there either.Would installing the java plugin cause a conflict with Crescendo playing music with NS6?

What did happen is this...I installed the CRESCENDO v. 5.1 plugin to the Netscape 6 plugin folder. It seemed to work fine, and it played midi music online without a problem. But...when I would go to a page which has midis for DOWNLOADING and when I would click on one of them, which would load the midi to play, so I could hear it first, and it would play fine.

PROBLEM...After the song started to play, the whole page would FREEZE UP. I could NOT SCROLL the page either up or down with my mouse, I could NOT STOP the midi from playing. I could NOT close the browser at all. Everything just FROZE and the only way to dump the page was to do a CAD and close the browser that way.

I have tried everything I know to correct this but have had no success. I uninstalled the Crescendo plugin..reinstalled it... I tried copying my plugins folder from Communicator 4.79 over to the Netscape 6 plugin folder and none of those worked to solve the problem.

Has anyone else had this same problem with Crescendo plugin? Is there a way to correct this so that the page will scroll when the midi song is playing? Could it be something else installed on my machine which is causing a conflict? Or since this is a 'Sillydog' build of Netscape, is it possible the problem lies within this particular version of NS-6? Or would it be that Crescendo does NOT work with some of these particualr build versions?

Finally, I just got tired of trying to solve it. so I uninstalled NS6 and am back using Communicator. I would really like to use the NS 6 browser as I liked it a lot, but I need help in using Crescendo with it and need to know how to stop it from freezing up the whole page, even the scroll bar when a midi song is playing on a web page. Could you tell me what file associations should be set, or associated with NS6 concerning Crescendo? Is their any hope for this problem, if not, then I'm stuck with Communicator I guess.

TIA for any help you can offer.

    Welcome to the Forum !

    Hi Vanilla Ice,

No probs there either. Would installing the java plugin cause a conflict with Crescendo playing music with NS6?

Installing the plugin should have no effect on Crescendo. However, I did read on the Crescendo site, their Knowledge Base, that turning off Java might help avoid crashes.
    LiveUpdate KB

Or since this is a 'Sillydog' build of Netscape, is it possible the problem lies within this particular version of NS-6? Or would it be that Crescendo does NOT work with some of these particualr build versions?

No, this has nothing to do with your crashes. This has to do with Crescendo. I tested their Beta5.1, and had to stop using it because it would crash exactly as you described, and then some. I am using 5.1 now, but if I try to download a midi file, it will crash the 6.2.1 browser! Very, very, annoying. I can play a midi to my heart's content, just can't download... well, I was able to download a midi from the Crescendo site, and no crash there. Also no problems if a midi is embedded in a web page. It will play with no problems.

Go to this Crescendo Newsgroup and complain a lot about the inability to use the plugin with Netscape 6.x. Maybe they will be able to fix it soon. Just know that you are not alone!

    Crescendo plug in problem

I previously had a similiar problem which was caused by the spyware that was loaded when I installed crescendo. I installed AdAdware which located the spyware and uninstalled it for me. I can now download midi files ok, but am using NS 4.79

    Hi Marv6,

Yes, you are quite correct! Crescendo used to include Webhancer, but it has been removed in the newer Versions.

I've never had a problem with Communicator and Crescendo, only with Netscape 6.

I have the same problem w/ Netscape 6.22 and the latest crescendo. I can play a midi but go to an embedded page and it totally hangs. I am awaiting a mail from crescendo. I'll let you'all know what they say. I finally dumped 6.22 for this and other problems.. It looks pretty but....

Here's what Liveupdate had to say:
    Hello,

Some users have reported that turning off the Auto-Detach
feature, where a second player is opened so you can surf while
listening to music, solved their crashing problems. Please try
turning off the Auto-Detach feature and let us know if that
works. If the player is embedded in the web page, right-click
on the player and go to Options--> "Allow Auto-Detach" and
de-select it. If it is detached, floating in its own window,
click on the Options menu and select "Allow Auto-Detach" to
    remove the checkmark beside it.

If you have an ATI or Matrox video card they could be causing
the problem. If this is the case, disabling Java in your
browser could fix the problem. To disable Java in Netscape go
to Edit | Preferences, click on Advanced and uncheck the box
next to "Enable Java." To disable Java in Internet Explorer,
go to Tools | Internet Options, click on the Security tab,
click on the "Custom Level" button, scroll down to the Java
section, and select the radio button next to "Disable Java. "
The manufacturers are aware that these problems with Java and
their video drivers exist. Please note that these are the only
cards that we know of with this issues.

    Thanks,

    Mark McKnight

    Bimmer Guy,

Thanks for sharing that valuable info. I have copied it for safe keeping to try later and will get back to ya about whether any of it works or even helps.

    Thanks again,

    Bimmer Guy,

Thank you for sharing Mark's email. I'm hoping this will be a good fix. I'll let you know, as I have just installed the 6.2.2 Standalone to test for problems someone else is having. I'll try all the things I couldn't do without crashing, on 6.2.1.

    No dice!

I still cannot save a midi file without Netscape 6.2.2 freezing. Playing an embedded midi on any site works fine, but still no dice on downloading/saving a midi file.

    Phooey!
